id imagine you could teach marksmanship of a bolt action along with the cool factor of a lever...perhaps a Ruger 96/22

No, 8 is not too young to be taught about firearms and begin shooting.

I got my 8 Y/O son a Rossi 22/410 single shot with a wood stock. It was tough finding a matched pair with wood furniture these days. He is of average height/weight for his age and it fits him perfectly. When he gets a little older and is ready for the .410 I'll put a limbsaver on it and it will extend the stock by a good 1".
