Gun for my wife to use?

I just thought of something that we've neglected to ask.

How much money are you willing to spend on her new toy?

As has been said, the most important thing is that he handgun fit the individual's hand. Everything else comes second (because they're so easy to deal with). Why would you want to start out with a gun that doesn't fit the individual shooter and forcing them to adapt to the tool instead of getting the tool that fits the individual anyway?

There are a limited set of grip angles, grip widths and reach to trigger in the various makes/models of handguns. If you find what make/model has a grip angle that matches the shooter's natural pointing position and fits the width of hand to width of grip you've found what "family" of handguns points most naturally for the shooter. From there you can work within that "family" to find the features to enhance the fit of the gun. These can be picking SA vs SA/DA for reach to trigger or having a trigger job done to shorten or lengthen the reach. Adding grip panels or changing grip material may be needed to tweak the gun into a perfect fit for the shooter's hand. Shaping the backstrap might be beneficial to wring that last little bit out of it.

Consider one of the new semis with interchangable back straps that change the entire grip angle if you don't find the gun with the features you want in the grip angle/width you fit.

Trouble with racking a slide? Try locking your grip on the slide and pushing the gun forward to rack the slide instead of tugging the slide back. The ergonomics are far more effective with the push than the pull. Consider having more aggressive cocking serrations a go.

Again, it's the fit of the gun to the new shooter that is the first thing that needs to be determined. All the rest becomes feature selection.

Ask yourself, is she really petite or small.

Good point. Short and petite are not the same thing. A person who is merely short may have the same body frame and, for lack of a better term, general power to their body as a taller person if the difference is all in the length of the arms and legs.

A petite person is one who is perfectly proportioned, but built on a smaller scale and with that you're likely to get more issues of strength due to a smaller overall frame.

And, as my sister and I prove, hand size may have nothing whatsoever to do with being either short or petite. We're exactly the same height. I'm short and she's petite. I have small hands with short fingers and she has large hands with fingers so long that she can fold the first joint down over the ends of mine if we put them palm to palm.

:D

As an instructor my guess is that she will probably LIKE the Hi-Power best but that's NOT the gun I'd recommend for her. Have you thought of a Sig with the DAK trigger or maybe an H&K P30 with the LEM trigger?

I'd let her hold the following:

Sig P6/P225
Sig P239
Beretta (Stoeger) Cougar
CZ82/83
S&W 3913
Glock 19
XD9
Ruger SR9
Walther P99
H&K P2000
Taurus 24/7 9mm
and as many other like sized guns to see what feels right to HER, then try to have her shoot as many of these as possible, then let HER decide.

Springfield Armory EMP for the win!

(1) Fits a small hand
(2) Easier to draw the slide than many semi-autos
(3) Slide release for initial load smoother than the Kahr
(4) Good balance of weight, not too light or heavy
(5) Single stack therefore concealable
(6) Based on the design given by the Lord to JMB
(7) Wide variety of after-market grips so she can 'customize'
(8) 9mm affordable to practice with yet effective for SD

My girl ended up going with a Ruger SP101 revo in .357mag. She can use 38spl to practice with cheaply, and 38spl +p for defense. She feels comfortable shooting full house .357mags out of it when she wants to.

Ruger just came out with the .327Magnum in the Sp101 platform. Has close to the velocity and punch of a .357 magnum without all the recoil. I would have your girl look at this guy for grins.

My GF really likes the simplicity. It will also outlast anything. They are also endlessly customizable.

My girl got the 3" hammered version. A little big for conceal carry, but not for a purse gun. The 327mag also holds 6 rounds instead of just 5.

My GF has also taken a liking to my 1911's. Specifically my SW Scandium commander size .45 .

She shoots that fairly comfortably. She has a bit of trouble with my glocks. Mainly just racking the slide.

She is 5'8 and 140. Her hands are about medium ladies size.
