I need advice getting my girlfriend started in a major caliber

Wedge,

Better have her test fire the 19 before you buy. My wife won't shoot my 17 because she says the recoil is much worse than the recoil of her full size 9mm USP.

UPDATE

Kate & I went to the range again yesterday. She is so determined not to let the bad old P90 whup her... It is so cute.

Nevertheless, she still doesn't like it. This time, she made it through 3 magazines. She said it just kicks too much. I suggested (jokingly) that she touch off a cylinder of full-on 44 Magnums, and she will be grateful for the LACK of recoil in the P90, hehehe.

Anyhow, I was walking around and checking out my fellow shooters' guns, looking for something she might like to try. I spotted a Beretta 92FS Inox with black rubber grips. I thought that would be worth a shot. (though I suspected it would be too beefy for her tiny hands)

Kate has MUCH smaller hands than I do, and I have small to medium hands for a guy. She didn't find it too big, much to my surprise. She liked the way it was curved to fit her hand. I think it weighs about the same as my P90, but she says it feels like less.

She shot a magazine full, and at first she didn't like it. (she had just come from shooting Mk. IIs...) By the end of the first 5 rounds, she started to warm up to it considerably. Two magazines later, she didn't want to stop.

That has me really considering the suggestions for the CZ75 and CZ75 compact. I have held them, and they really do feel great in the hand. Of course, the Beretta is still in the running too, but I think when she feels something as curvacious as the Beretta, but in a size more suited to her hand, she will be in love

The HK USP9 full-size also sounds like an excellent suggestion, though it is WAY out of my price range right now. The CZ is too, but it won't be for quite as long, hehehe. I will save up for a few months and in the meantime, I will see if we can bum one for a mag or two when we are at the range next.

Even with the Beretta though, she had a rough time getting the slide cocked. It makes me think that it is a revolver that is really in her future...

So I think for now, the sights are set on a CZ-75, (though it doesn't have as much cocking area to grip as I'd like to see) Beretta 92FS, or a S&W 625 revolver in 45 ACP.

Of course, I still have high hopes for the Glock 34 which is en route. (should have it early this coming week)

Thanks for all the great thoughts guys.

Make sure she handles the CZ. From backstrap to trigger they can be long and hard for small handed shooters to grasp well.

Smaug,

I understand the price thing, maybe you can find a used USP.

I've been having my wife try different guns for years and haven't found another semi-auto or revolver in .38Sp or above that she can work anywhere near as well as the USP...

YOU may like the 34 a lot, but I think you're being way optimistic about it being a good gun for her.
