Gun Free Zones

I saw that segment on The Five today.

Every time this topic comes up with Juan Williams in the discussion, I wish I could ask him why he is so afraid of my ability to protect myself. He always wants to rely solely on the police and military for protection. He always comes across as being so disconnected with reality in that regard.

Juan williams can't help himself. Even when commonsense prevails, as in today's discussion, he opts out.

A hoplophobe from birth. There is no help here. It's fatal.

Amusingest quote from that:

"Fact: A massacre's duration is dictated by the time other bullets arrive."

Terry

I try not to refer to them as gun free zones, maybe sarcastically as "gun free" zones, because, well, when people use that term they are referring to areas that differ from everywhere else due to nothing more than the presence of words on paper or maybe a sign on a door. There is nothing gun free about them.

Legally armed citizen free perhaps. Armed good guy free perhaps.

Well said Warp. I hadn't thought of how the term "gun free zone" is used. You are absolutely correct in your assertions. We need better words to describe schools, malls, etc.

I watched the same discussion. Juan Williams is disconnected in virtually every subject he talks about. He keeps talking over others who attempt to join in the discussion as though not allowing them to speak somehow proves his point.

230RN, love that quote.

Warp, I like yours, too.

GFZs operate under the false assumption that someone willing to commit crimes such as murder, assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, or other violent felonies, will be dissuaded by an additional law that says they can't bring a weapon with them.

Nope. Never have. If they thought such signs would work, there would be NO ROBBERY, NO VIOLENT FELONY signs as well, but there aren't.

Nobody has ever thought that signs would protect you from the bad guys.

^ And "No Shiplifting" would save the retail industry billions of dollars a year and all our prices would go down.

Dream on, space queens.

 ETA : zxcvbob was kind enough to inform me of the "ahoplifting" error in my fat-fingered typing. Thank you, zxcvbob! :)

I believe that most GFZ fans don't think that bad people will obey the sign, but rather they actually think that a (good) person with a gun will suddenly go nuts and start shooting people for no reason.

Why that would be the case, I cannot begin to imagine, but I have heard people (in person, not on TV) say that, almost in so many words.

Gun free zones are the only thing keeping our children safe in areas like public schools. They should just cut out the middleman and make murder illegal.:scrutiny:

Williams is paid to be the "Oh contrare" on any Fox show he is on.

His son is a Conservative.

Shows that someone in the family can separate fiction from reality.

Obviously the purpose of gun free zones is too prevent accidents with guns in those zones. The probability of a shooter is virtually zero. And yes good people carrying guns do go crazy, like escalating an argument or being drunk. That being said I'm against gun free zones but recognize why people are for them.

If gun free zones are such a great idea then I propose we make them universal. No one around the King of the United States would be allowed to have a gun. Not even the Secret Service or the U.S MARINES (oh wait, they already do that now - the King cannot trust the U. S. MARINES). Guns are just too dangerous and they might accidentally shoot the King. Accidentally. They just go off sometimes. The King would be so much safer with no dangerous guns around. The Secret Service agents could be issued pepper spray or a whistle instead and wear T shirts that say "Shooting the King is forbidden" on the front and "We're not kidding!" on the back. Then he would be so much safer and we could all be good Socialists and live happily ever after.
