There's a good possibility I will be offered a promotion to transfer from Atlanta to Huntsville in the near future. Just wondering if this area is reasonably gun friendly. I have an indoor range about a mile from where I live here and I'm hoping there would be a good selection of ranges there as well. Also, I'll have my Georgia CCW - will it be a problem converting to Alabama? I've also read that the county sheriff's issue permits there and can be somewhat restrictive if they want too. Appreciate any feedback... Dave

Check out wheretoshoot.org (I think) or the NRA's site for places to shoot.
Getting a Pistol Permit in Alabama should be simple. There's not a lot to it.

Can't see H'ville being anti, except maybe some of the Federal places there, as NASA is pretty big in that town. I would make a weekend trip, look up all the gun shops, and visit them on Saturday. Get a feel from the locals.

I am in Florence, 67 miles from my house to Larry's Pistol and Pawn with The Ammo Dump indoor range in Huntsville. I would call the area gun-friendly, but then I have lived here for most of my adult life and don't really know what goes on elsewhere. I don't know the current sheriff's permit policy, but most of the folks I know in Madison Co. have one, so he can't be too tough.

I will be at Larry's this evening for the biweekly IDPA indoor shoot. The club rents the range after store hours on alternate Tuesdays. IDPA is my main sport and I can shoot it within a reasonable combat radius every Saturday and two Tuesdays a month. There are a couple others that are closer to Huntsville than Florence.
There is also IPSC in the area and some 3-gun.
Been a while since I did much shotgunning but you can find Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays.

I am not as up on conventional (bullseye) shooting. I shoot a little F-Class at Tullahoma when available, and have traveled to Ft Benning and Memphis for it. Those places also shoot across the course. The Blue & Gray club at Guntersville and Magic City in Birmingham have programs that I know of.

Move to Huntsville! You'll love it.

Jim is correct on all counts.

Huntsville is a very gun-friendly city. Since you have a Georgia CCW, and Alabama is a reciprocates, then you are automatically covered in Alabama with your Georgia license on a temporary basis. Applying for your Alabama CCW is easy. I've never known anyone to be turned down.

Larry's Pistol/Pawn and the Ammo Dump is a real nice indoor range. Cheap shooting too! $10 per hour. Larry's also has a great selection of firearms. It will probably become your new toy store.

There is also a nice range up in New Market, which is about 20 miles northeast of Huntsville. It is an outdoor range and also has a skeet range.

I'll be happy to show you around anytime you are in this area. Like any city, there are good and bad places to live. Just PM me and I'll help you out however I can!

John

This is cheerful news folks. Now it's up to the Army to see if they make me the offer I'd like. I expect to know one way or the other this week... Dave

Oh, yeah, there is ample Cowboy shooting hereabouts, too.

Note that I emphasize organized competitive shooting. The only reason I get on a range where score is not being kept is to practice or test.

In addition to those that live in Huntsville and post here, I know of at least a few others that live in or around Huntsville and read these forums but just don't post much (or at all ....I'm guilty). Yup, it's quite gun-friendly here and there are quite a few gun enthusiasts in this town.

So I guess now that I've been exposed I'll go ahead and say "Hi everyone". :)

Actually, NGIB is an acronym for how my dear wife addresses me: No Good Irish Bastard...

Damn, NGIB! You owe me a keyboard! :D

Well, I'm not shy and generally not a lurker by nature. Dunno why I never said much here before, but I'll probably be posting more now. (you've been warned)

Cougfan2 +1

Since your sigline said "Proud to be a Veteran" I thought you might be ex-AF. NGIB or New Guy In Back is what we refer to a new backseater in fighters.

Ala Dan
....the state will have too build a fence a'round the entire state; just to house all the thugs~!

We don't want to keep 'em in, Dan. Let them go!

I lived in the Huntsville area for 3 or 4 years in the early '80s. Very gun-friendly, as is all Alabama

I live fifteen minutes south of Huntsville. During deer season (now) anywhere in a twenty mile radius of Huntsville looks like Bosnia in the eighties: Everybody is packing openly. No problems with guns here at all.

*laugh* This is so true. Camo'd out and packing!

I live about 45 mins south of Huntsville and work just outside of Huntsville. It's a very gun friendly area and Larry's is one of my favorite places to shop. I also enjoy their indoor range.

I'm one of those guy's that C-Tzar mentioned only I haven't been as shy as him about posting :p

Anyway, H'Ville is fairly gun friendly, yes the sheriff CAN issue permits at his descretion but I've never heard of a case where he didn't, at least out of the 6 people I know with permits. In Huntsville you can expect a 3-4 week wait while it is processed, in some more rural areas it can be alot faster (up to the point of walk in fill out paperwork and walk out with one). While we don't have as many places to shoot as some areas of the country, there are a fair number of decent ranges including Larry's Pistol and Pawn/Ammo dump.

I actually have a question, someone earlier mentioned the Blue & Grey club, I was thinking about looking into their club after checking out their website, anyone have any positive or negative info on it.

BTW Grizzly, I am retired Air Force, checked out in 1992 after 20 years and 21 days...

Just waiting now to see if they'll call and make the offer. Civil service has as much "hurry up and wait" as the active duty military. Thanks all for the input as I just really got back into shooting again after a long hiatus and I'd hate to quit again...

The Blue and Gray are a Highpower rifle orientated gun club. They have monthly 100 yard reduced course NMC competitions. Don't expect to win HM class unless you can shoot in the high 480's out of 500. But if you are a Marksman, you are going to have fun. A good number of Marksman show up because they just like shooting the older military firearms.

They have Pot Shots about twice a month for eight months. They also have an Junior Air Rifle team, which they help with financing the Juniors to Camp Perry.

Bullseye is waining, but they do have a once a month Bullseye match.

No machine guns or 50 cal BMG allowed at the range.

You have to be a member of the NRA to join the club. It is a CMP club.

Again, welcome and you'll like it in AL. There's a lot of retirees around.

I live half way between Montgomery and Auburn. Ever in this area give me a shout.
