This is precisely what I was about to say. I second this advice, whole heartedly! And give him advance notice, just in case he would like to add to the coffers.

It results in good stories. I helped my brother pick out a VERY sweet, cherry 1965 1100. Looked brand new. Had some celebratory BBQ and took it shooting that day. We wound up trying to finish up our skeet round in the middle of a driving rainstorm. Broke it in right and proper. Gun is still gorgeous, didnt hurt a thing.

1. The firearm is going to be a bolt action hunting rifle.

2. Yes, my BIL is an honest to goodness, card carrying, legal resident of Texas.

3. He lives at home with his parents, not in a dorm. Storage of the rifle will be at home, locked up.

4. Think we’re gonna go ahead and do my original plan of either sending him money and having him buy his own gift, or I fly down and give him money and he buys his own gift.
