The above title appeared in another thread and instantly made me snicker.

One of my favorite instructors, who'll I'll not embarrass here, (but is the funniest guy I've ever met) is very particular on the slang for firearms.

Gat - Belongs to the bad guys.

"If you're hinky button is going off because you think that guy over there has a gat; you pull your sh*! and cover him"

Sh*! - your beloved CCW.

So what are your favorite slang terms for firearms?

Smoke

"Smokepole", "rod", "piece", "iron", "old Betsy", and many more. Most of the slang terms for a gun originated in movies and 1930's detective stories, not on the street. I have known a few of what I might call less than wonderful members of our society, and they mainly just called it a gun, though I heard "piece" (used by police) quite often from bad guys. They more often used the same terms we use, "Lorcin", "Glock", ".45", "Model 19", "MAC-10", and so on.

It's a twelve gauge double barreled Remington, S-Mart's top-of-the-line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids Michigan. Retails for about $109.95. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop Smart. Shop S-mart. Ya got that?!

"Hogleg"

--esp. for large revolvers. (I have no creditable reference as to how this term came about, but an old saddle holster sure did look like a ham)

"Hog Leg", "Six Gun", "Shooter", "Hand Cannon", "Bullet Hose",
"P@WN@G3 Maker" (Counterstrike Numskull speak)
"Assault Rifle", "Assault Weapon", "Cap Busta" (Gangsta Wannabie)
"Pea Shooter" (.22's), "Death Machine" (More Counterstrike nonsense)
etc, etc, etc.....

Frontsight seems to like the term, blaster. I kind of like it also.

"The term "Mohaska" goes back a number of years."
Where does this come from ? I have been using that term for a number of years after hearing it in a movie: The Untouchables ? Where Sean Connery walks up to the other guy playing Ellot Ness on the bridge and taps his night stick on Eliot's shoulder holster and says, "What's with the Marhaska (Mohaska ?). Maybe I have been saying it wrong, I thought he said, Marhaska ?

A revolver is a "ratchet" in a Jimmy Cliff song.
So I'll take the obvious step of calling a semiauto a "slide".
