I don't start many threads, so I feel this is important!

I don't know about all Insurance Companys, but mine requires a seperate addition to the home owners insurance for Guns and Jewelry.

Jewelry was easy enough, it pretty much has only come from one store, bust out the catalog and tell the insurance company HOW MUCH.

Gun's on the other hand, was and is a shocker, They wanted a "Detailed Report". I was totally blown away, nickles and dimes here and there have added up to alot. Good deals when purchased, have high replacement values if ever stolen or destroyed. Building a few part-by-part spread loaded alot of the cost, so to see what they are really worth was a suprise. A gun Purchased in 2002 at a retail of $450, may now have a retail $686. Some guns aren't in production anymore, so replacement value could be 2x the originial price.

You maybe shocked to find out what your 'small' collection will add up to at retail and replacement cost, expecially if you've gotten good deals

Most homeowners/renters insurance policies these days have a coverage limit for things such as fine art, jewelry, furs, firearms, stamp collections, antiques and the like. These coverage limits typically run from $ 5000 to 25,000, depending on the policy and the items covered. If you own such items, and the worth of these items is more than the coverage limit, than most insurance companies will be happy to sell you a 'rider' or endorsement that provides higher coverage limits.

I have add on coverage thru statefarm - its not very expensive. HAd it before on a renters policy - now I have it on my homeowners. Something like less than $2 every 6 months or something...

And to cover yourself, keep the receipts for all valuables in a fireproof safe or safe deposit box(better option). I took pictures with a disposable camera(I only have digital cameras) of everything in my house including my firearms, electronics, furniture, etc and had the film developed and put the pics and negatives in a safe deposit box. Make sure that serial numbers are visible in the pictures. Split the cost with friends or relatives, it's worth it. My parents got robbed once and had they not had the receipts for all the power tools that were taken from the basement they would have lost alot. Had it been a fire the file cabinet the receipts were in would have been destroyed. I also keep titles to vehicles, property, etc in there too.

NRA Arms Care is a nice program. $1000 of coverage with membership, and if you need more you may buy it! The nice thing is, you only pay the difference.
ie. You need $3000 worth of coverage, you only pay for $2000- the original $1000 is still gratis.
The rate isn't bad either:)
