A good friend of my brother's (and a friend of mine) inherited a bunch of guns when his parents died a few years ago. Many are guns that have been in the family for quite a few generations. Anyway, he recently bought a new house and I got to check out some of what he had.

-An original WWI Colt 1917 revolver in .45acp. The original finish is in far from perfect condition, but it isn't too bad. It looks more like fading than holster wear (they don't exactly store their guns in the most careful fashion).

-An original Colts Woodsman .22lr pistol in near perfect condition.

-A 100+ year old Winchester pump rifle in .22lr that is in nearly perfect condition (there is some wear to the finish around the pump).

-A first generation (I think), 120+ year old, Winchester 1873 in .32WCF (I think that was the caliber). Being a big fan of lever rifles I was truly drooling, my hands were shaking when I picked it up. Unfortunatly, 100+ years of careless storage has somewhat taken its toll, but it wasn't too bad. A little rust on the barrel, very little pitting, but easily in shootable condition. Still, handling it you could feel the history in your hands.

There were dozens of others (old rifles and shotguns mostly, including an original Civil War era rifle that apparently has a charge of blackpowder and a minie ball in it), but of the ones I saw these most caught my eye.

Hmm, I wonder what I should offer to see if I can make that Winchester 1873 or the Colt 1917 mine? (Not going to happen, whatever financial value these guns have will no where near match the sentimental value they have to this friend).

My brother had the same thing happen just about a year ago. His wifes parents had passed and he asked me to help him with the guns, identification, value and such.

I had no idea that my siter in laws parents were so into guns, they had some really nice pieces.
