Where did you get that information? The article said the man who was shot was arrested at a hospital and
charged with felony residential burglary and possession of a stolen car
an article about this story was posted when the shooting took place. That article stated
The wounded man, who had entered the house through a ''dog door,'' fled through a front window of the resident's home and drove off in a BMW sport utility vehicle that the resident had reported stolen Sunday night.

edit: sorry, I was thinking about everything I've heard about the case without thinking about what wasn't mentioned here.

So, would the trustees be as upset if Mr. Demar had used a 12 gauge scattergun to enroll the perp in the "Rehabilitation Through Reincarnation" program?

I can think of at least one politician who should be mugged.

I think what TBO is trying to say is that in most (not all, but most) places, even if you find a perp in your home, you cannot just blast him just for being there. This is a fine point that some of the warrior princes in our midst like to ignore. There must be a threat of physical harm to a person. Now, that said, there is no duty to retreat inside (generally), and if he is walking up to you and ignoring orders to halt, you REALLY need to ask yourself why. ;)

Also, naturally, if its his word versus yours, and he's dead, well...we know who is gonna win that argument. ;)

But just saying "I found a guy in my rec room and I blasted him" will NOT fly. This is why you need to wire your mouth shut and get an attorney.

But, I'll echo Tamara. If the cops are not charging him, likely this is a good shoot.

And, oh yes. Two thumbs WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY up for the letter.

Coronach, I see what you're saying, but don't most laws allow for "I heard a noise so I went to investigate and found an intruder so I shot him" type situations? I mean if someone is in your house, the only way to really determine if they're a threat is if they attack you or you see a weapon. In both of those situations, it's probably already too late.

Wow, nice letter. Touch of anger, but not too much, at a system that would rather leave him defenseless. Very clearly written, should do some good.

That's not the fear I wanted my children to experience, nor is it the cowardly act that I want my children to remember me by.

This is my favorite line out of the whole letter. We need more men like this.

"Rehabilitation Through Reincarnation" program..... I like that idea captain.

Its another one of these situations where you have to remember the old saying. When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns. What good does it do to ban guns due to the fact that a mentally ill woman had used one on a shooting spree? SHe could have gotten the gun from somewhere outside of the city and done the same with it. Gun control means two bullets one hole and each person is responsible for keeping his/her gun out of the hands of those who are not competent or responsible enough to handle them.

This incident happened in the NW suburbs of Chicago and that's where I live, but not in that exact city. I've been following the story pretty closely. One thing not mentioned, but IMO funny nontheless. When the burglar returned and had entered the house, and was met by the homeowner (and his 38 I believe) the robber made a very quick exit...through the front window. The news showed the shattered glass and broken window.

I applaud the homeowner. It's the bleeding heart liberals trying to save us all I can't condone. But the interviewed sheeple had quite bizarre comments. However, last night newscast had a phone in poll asking if what the homeowner did was right. 95% voted yes. Of course, the news interviewed the 5% after the shooting. And the Chief of Police in Wilmette is a buffoon.

Did everyone else notice this? In his letter to the paper he specifically recalls this portion of conversation:

The police informed me that this was not an uncommon event in east Wilmette and offered their condolences.

Gee... could this be such an uncommon event as a RESULT of the gun ban?! Burglars know they are safer robbing these homes because the owners are required by law to be UNARMED, thus making their homes much LESS safe than an armed home, being that they are now much more higly susceptible to burglaries, break-ins , and intrusions. I wish there was a way to point this out to Mr. DeMar and his town... so they could realize that the crime in their town is a DIRECT RESULT of their actions.

Did anyone else just stand up in front of your computer and cheer after reading that letter?!

I sure did...until I read the statements by the village trustee :cuss: :fire:

I think what TBO is trying to say is that in most (not all, but most) places, even if you find a perp in your home, you cannot just blast him just for being there.

Castle Doctrine anyone?

Odd, I think it's actually the other way around. Most of the times, lethal force can be used if an occupied house is broken into.

However, where it gets hairy is when a home owner pursues or happens to peg the BG in the back. Shooting outside the house can also be iffy as well, but generally speaking, lethal force can be used inside the home.

Hell, seeing a masked intruder inside your own home should be reason enough. Screw what the intruders intentions are, I aint going have him sit down over a cup of coffee.

Excellent letter, one of the best that I read. I am surprised that the burglar wasn't dissuaded by a 90lb german shepherd. I always believed that a dog was one of the best home security systems. Just goes to show that your home protection should be layered, alarm, dog, firearm.
