Ignorance at its best again! I was on my way into work today at o-dark 30 and most of the local radio shows do a sort of public service anouncement radio show talking about a diffrent subject every week. I missed the begining so I do not know what the subject was but the person being interviewed made the statement of
male gun owners are 20 times more likely to drink and 50 times more likely to look at porn than non-gun owners.
 where did that set of stats come from. I have emailed the radio station to inquire about this person and what they were thinking with this stat. I suspect that this stat is stacked any way since it is male gun ownser v/s "non-gun owners" indicating men and women.
Either way the whole statement was set up to make male gun owners look bad.

Drink well sure I do I make my own beer:evil:. But porn not so much its just not something I do:mad:.

Well... coming from a psych degree, and knowing how to manipulate statistics rather well.

That is probably an accurate statistic, but let's look at it another way.

Let's say most of the gun owners are MALES. Now let's say, MALES are more likely to DRINK and look at PORN.

Makes more sense now, if A=B, and B=C, then A=C. It's just putting a twist on it. They're just being asshats.

It's like saying people who floss regularly live 10 years longer. That is statistically shown, but they're not looking into the fact that people who floss regularly probably tend to take better care of themselves overall.

exactly, too many lurking variables

its like saying that most ice cream is consumed in the summer months, and that most murders are commited during the summer months, therefor ice cream makes people want to commit murder

Crap! *zips fly* Lemme put down my beer so I can respond!

50 times more likely? Hmmm. I doubt that.

I love being portrayed as a wife-beating, beer and whiskey chugging, Marlboro smoking, woman oogling, gun toting redneck!

If it weren't for the wife beating part, they'd have profiled me perfectly. ;)

Truth be told, my little lady could probably whup me whenever she wanted too.

The real question that should have been asked when this BS came out is "do women gun owners drink more and look at porn?". They want to lay an ugly image on male gun owners so let them answer that question.

Seems if they want to tie bad habits to gun owners then the question has to be answered in the positive. Then women will straighten out the BS real quick. LOL

100 times more likely to look at gun porn. they failed to qualify the type of porn...

they say that like its a bad thing. i guess they are against the 1st amendment too! Isn't the 1st what they used to protect the pron producers.

I hate pornography.

Don't get me started there.

Beer on the other hand is delicious. I prefer budweiser, which is finely hand crafted in very small 33 million gallon batches.

outstanding.

I told you guys that the term "gun-porn" wasn't helping the cause ;)

You're intimating that ice cream doesn't make people want to commit murder? But, look at the statistics!

Without divulging my personal habits, who the hell cares?

Our media is OBSESSED with sexualization of -- well, everything.

Likely to look at porn? Hell, that sounds like mainstream society-- not counterculture.

I was an old frat guy-- would you like to even IMAGINE the porn that circulated in a frat house???

We won't EVEN talk about alcohol. I don't drink anymore, but in my day I had a funnel that held 3 quarts and required a two-story structure to use.

I frankly don't give a crap about what people do in the privacy of their own home. If you keep it to yourself, knock yourself out.

I am FAR more concerned about those who spend their time worrying about what others are doing in the privacy of their own home.

Now for disclosure, I should state that while I do not care for legislation of morality, I have a huge problem with the lack of responsibility of all of our media outlets as to what they display and the messages they give to our society.

211 Steel Reserve for me- more cost effective. What better recommendation than the do-gooders wanting to ban it?

Porn: makes no sense. If I were hungry would I look at a picture of a pork chop or a movie of people eating?

good beer I dont care who thinks other wise.

Crap beer but funny none the less

good point.

I am still waiting for a reply it will be tomorrow I am sure. A co-worker heard the same interview he said it was a discussion about
responsibility to other members of society
huh.........and what the statement had to do with that was totaly beyond me.......I am certian and it is clear that it was more liberal mentality of its always some one elses fault and
protect the children!

Wopasaurus, right on. I am working on a concentration in psych, and while it's not useful for much except sounding like I know something (;)), I concur.

What's more, "non-gun owners" include more of the very elderly, mentally handicapped, and very young...all of whom are less likely to look at porn and drink than the 18-60 demographic that comprises "gun-owners."

It's hogwash. But these statistical myths can be very influential and pervasive.

Another interesting example is that "police are more likely to commit suicide than the general population." Police are 18-55 year old males usually, and that demographic is at a higher risk of suicide. However, police are actually LESS likely than non-police 18-55 year old males to commit suicide.

Another shocking statistic: ice cream sales are correlated with drowning deaths. Can you believe it? Yeah...people swim more AND buy more ice cream in the summer.

Statistics are very confusing.

I don't drink but I do partake of porn every once in a while. Especially when you're out in a tent in some country where you don't speak the language and the only girls around you can speak to haven't showered in about as long as you have. Rosie Palm, Palmela Handerson and Playboy quickly become your best friends.

That is a good one. I won't soon forget it.

Crap beer but funny none the less

How could you say such a thing? That's just rotten.:)

The only valid conclusion that can be drawn from whatever survey this came from is that gun owning males are fifty times more likely to be honest in the face of a survey.

I like the stat that a gun owner has a smaller average penis size than average u.s. male standard

It is insulting until you remember all the women gunowners, whose 0 results will drag down the group average in that biometric

Well, they could have gotten even bigger numbers if they phrased the statement as "drink or view porn."

I mean, I sip a third of a shot-glass of Don Julio once in a blue moon, but phrased in that manner, I'm a statistic.

Another way to make gun owners look oh so evil....It is just another over blown stereotype that gun owners are evil homocidal maniacs..Last time I checked every person I know who owns gun is a Law abiding God Fearing American.
