Gun owners more likely to drink and look at porn? What?

I read that article before. I wasn't blaming you. I was just saying I don't know how that prevents or cures prostate cancer.

OK back on topic. It's really interesting to see how a thread will repeatedly digress again and again. Like Godwin's Law, there should be a theory explaining that phenomenon too.

Its plainly obvious that the statistics they threw out were fabricated.
Assuming that 100% of male gun owners both drink and look at porn, the statistic would still require less than 5% of the rest of the public to drink, and less than 2% of the rest of the public to look at porn.

The statistic probably is just fabricated, but the interesting question would be to ask "what is the definition of a non-gun owner?" Does it include children and babies? Dead people? Chinese peasants?

You're just not thinking dishonestly enough...

I must confess...I visited Oleg's website today. I enjoyed the pictures tremendously. :D

I am FAR more concerned about those who spend their time worrying about what others are doing in the privacy of their own home.

Exactly!
As long as you ain't scarin' the horses, it's no ones business.

I guess it would be OK to ask --What is the percentage of NON gun owners -V -Honest Gun owners =WHO-
become infected with HIV /Aids.
Engage in IV drugg usage .
Are arrested for Felony crimes .
Do not have regular jobs .
you get the idea.......

male gun owners are 20 times more likely to drink and 50 times more likely to look at porn than non-gun owners.

I am sorely offended by this sexist remark being as I am a male.

Since this is still a free country, and I have never taken a Statistics class...and have a right to express myself in a rebuttal:

Twenty percent of all Female Statisticians tell dirty jokes about men, while they wait at the window for the young male landscape worker to remove his shirt and drink a Coke at 11 am.

I just that made that up, still Internet Rules apply and since I have posted that on Internet - it is true.

Pornography and alcohol have been around far longer than gunpowder.

Perhaps they said the same about bow and sling owners back in the B.C. days.

it's kind of like saying how you're 1000 times more likely to accidentally shoot yourself with a gun if you own one: it's common sense manipulated for sensationalism.

I mean, of course you're more likely to shoot yourself with a gun IF YOU ACTUALLY HAVE ONE.

I also hope that the statistic is true, really. That means that we'll have alot of new NRA members in the future when alot of these teenagers turn 18 and/or 21 :p

I think this also shows how the gun argument is one on emotion and morality than it is about legality and constitutional right. This is easily the stupidest story I've heard in awhile regardless, though.

male gun owners are 20 times more likely to drink and 50 times more likely to look at porn than non-gun owners.

While I think these numbers are absolutely absurd, there's a chance I might fit that stereotype. :p

Some gun owners are likely to engage in completely legal behaviors that some find socially unacceptable?

L. Ron Hubbard help us all! We're doomed!

Amen!

Quote:"male gun owners are 20 times more likely to drink and 50 times more likely to look at porn than non-gun owners." So... where is the problem? I too make my own beer and it is far superior to Budwiser. Someone mentioned 211 beer, AKA Steel Reserve, an inexpensive brew but better than Bud.

I read the post about ice cream and murders. I heard a similar one in a statistics class (as an example of incorrect application of relationships) -

There is a direct relationship between the number of teachers in a city and the size of the city.

There is also a direct relationship between the number of alcoholics in a city and the size of the city.

Therefore, teachers are alcoholics.

(I suspect the people who prepared the guns/porn/alcohol statistics didn't
get this in class. Maybe they were absent that day, reading porn at the nearest tavern... :) )

Hey... We're gun owners, we like to have fun. What can I say? :)

Besides the obvious abilities to manipulate statistics, these folks may just be stating the obvious:

People who are drawn to more adventurous activities, also "party" harder. I am a licensed pilot, and studied aviation in college. I've never met a group of folks who liked to party as hard as the pilots I flew with back then, or the cops I work with now!

The same can probably be said for gun owners, who in my experience are more interesting and adventurous people than your average senior citizen in a quilting group!

This one's pretty much run its course.

Also, a Google search for this "study" yields no hits. (At least not in the couple minutes I spent searching for it) so I suspect the person making the original claims on the radio show was talking out of their fourth point of contact.
