HI guys, I've been a long time lurker, and posted a very few times here as you can tell. I do not own any weapons, but have been very interested for a while, and am seeking a good Gun Range that has rentals, etc, and doesnt require me to join a gun club.

I currently am a college student in Boston (Wentworth, right next to Northeastern), and the only weapon I have fired is an air-rifle during the schools rifle tryouts (where the coach was very helpful, taught me the 4 rules, and how to fire and everything).

I would personally like to get into hand guns, preferably a simple to use 9mm to start. So if anyone has any ideas on a good range that is hopefully off of the T-Line in boston (as I dont have a car!), I would be greatful.

Thanks a bunch,
Keaner

Only rental place I know of is The Firing Line in Manchester NH. They have full auto machine guns too to rent. :) Don't know any in MA, but you're welcome to come shoot with me up in Woburn. The range is like, 300 yards from my office so I go over there at lunch sometimes. Have you ever had any instruction at all?

Actually, now that I think of it, the Smith and Wesson place in Springfield lets you try out all their goodies too, for $25.00 for 50 rounds. No license needed, other than driver's license. Not exactly walking distance though.

Thanks for the tips guys!

The American Firearms school, now that I looked it up, is literally 3 miles from my grandparents house, so perhaps i can bum a ride from them over christmas break.

I personally wish my parents would let me own a gun, but they have the whole "not in my house" kind of thinking. Between that, and not being able to have a gun at school anyway, I'll have to wait till Im on my own. For now, Ill live with the 3" or so S&W knife I picked up in the city.

As far as instruction, I have had VERY little. Coach Lee taught me the basics on an air rifle, like sight picture, how to hold it, the 4 rules, etc, but that was only a total of 3 hrs instruction, and a total of like 5 hrs of shooting. I had a great time, but since I didnt make it (too much practice from prone, not enough off hand :(, not to mention how great the team here is), I havent shot since.

Thanks for the offers guys, Ill have to look into how far away I can go from the city easily on the train, but will most likely end up at the one in North Attleboro.

ETA: Jamz, I might just have to take you up on that offer one of these days, thanks!

American Firearms School is where I took my safety course. It's also where I discovered the awesomeness of Sigs. :) If you go there, rent the P226 if noone else is using it.

Heh, Ill take that into account. I have just recently (this morning) asked my parents for the $200 package on there, which is the safety course, and the complete setup for one day for Christmas. Hopefully they will put me through that!

Afterwards, I will most likely just visit every month or so, and spend 100$ or so on the whole getup (range rental, gun rental, ammo, targets, hearing & eye protection, etc)

Thanks for the input though. And if you guys have any other comments on any of what Ive said please, let me know, I'd like to know as much as I can before I go in!

Wow DR, thanks for the tip. That might be a good opportunity to spend a few hours out of the dorm on a weekend! Thanks!

Bob's Tactical in Salisbury. Nice guys. Kinda Dumpy. They sell/rent guns and ammo. Indoor range.
90 Lafayette Road, Salisbury; call 978-465-5561

I lived in Beverly for six years, and I went to Bob's Tactical many times. As friendly as I was, nobody remembered my name except Jim Balloo ("Mister BAR"), and he's never around anymore.

Frank once almost cleared leather on me when I walked in with a Mag-Lite 4-D cell flashlight to try the Harris stance with. Perhaps I shouldn't have been carrying by the neck in my left hand but it was the last time I ever went there.

YMMV.

American Firearms School is a great place...a modern facility with a great staff. All are made to feel welcome, from beginners to experts.

...call them first to make sure they have ammo...

Keaner,

If you go to AFS call them first to make sure that the range is open to the public, that they have the firearm you want to rent and that they have ammo for it. It will cost you about $25 an hour, plus $8 or so for the gun rental and perhaps $20 to $30 dollars for 100 rounds of ammo. I don't think you can bring your own ammo if you rent their gun(s), but I'm not sure.

They have blackout times when the range is used by LEO organizations.

Thanks for the tip shermacman! I found their website, and will most likely spend a few bucks to get down there sometime this weekend and check it out. Thanks for a perfect solution!

Smith & Wesson in Springfield has a public range and store where you can rent and try virtually any of their guns.

Clemson

Clemson-- yeah, that sounds awesome entirely, but springfield is like 100 miles away from boston, otherwise Id be there EVERY day of the week, :D

It does sound like something that would be worth a roadtrip one of these days though...
