We are planning on moving to Greenville SC in the next year or so and are starting our search for a house. I'm looking for enough land that I can shoot on my own property, but that is proving hard to find within my budget and desired location. So as a backup I'd like to make sure I'm a reasonable distance from a good shooting range.

What I'm looking for in a range is something that will let me practice USPSA/IDPA style courses of fire. So a range that only has a static firing line with firing lanes won't work for me.

The range I currently shoot at has 8 shooting bays and when you go, you use a bay for you and anyone who is with you. The bays start at 25x15 yards up to 40x40 yards. Then we have a 200 yard rifle range that is static with shooting benches.

I'd love it if I could find something similar near Grenville. I haven't been able to find it thus far in my searches. If I can get a list of a few ranges, then I plan on checking them out this summer to see how they are and then try and find a house within a reasonable drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For USPSA style practice, Spartanburg Practical Shooting Club (www.shootspsa.org) is basically your only option. It is very cheap to join (for now) and has barricades, barrels, target stands, etc out for general use. You can ONLY shoot pistols there.

For static rifle range, the Pickens County public range is ok, but limited to 100yd. Greenville Gun Club is private, more expensive (at least for the first year) but has a nice rifle range out to 300 which is the longest in the area.

There is a club called "SCOTG" about 45 minutes south in Laurens, which has 1k yard rifle, and a bunch of bays, but I have never been there and don't know details of membership, what you can do, etc, but it might be worth finding out.

Thanks for the quick reply ny32182. I also ran a little better search and found your reply to another users very similar question back in 2010. That thread can be found here for anyone else that would like this information:

Link to a couple of the ranges websites:

If I find more I will try and remember to update this list.

Ah yes, SkipJ should be on the list for pistol also.

Spartanbug gun club I believe is 100% shotgun, which isn't my thing so I'm not familiar with them... it is a different entity entirely than SPSA.

This link might help some. I'm sure it isn't an all-inclusive list and I'm not sure which locations might be near Greenville. I shoot at the SCDNR Palachucola range and it's well maintained and not very crowded. Many of the people like me who use it live a little south of there in an area heavy with retirees so as a result, the demographics tend to be a little "more mature", ie. old geezers, but we're pretty heavily into our AR's and M1 Garands. Welcome to the state.

Edit--sorry, I just saw that square ranges don't do it for you. DNR ranges are all static.

I live in Greenville and am a member of the Greenville Gun Club. IDPA, CPSL, and SASS have monthly matches there and some groups that use the club for matches do not require club membership. Membership is $150/year but involves an additional application fee and first year initiation fee. Greenville already has a Cabela's and a Bass Pro Shop is in planning stage. Be glad to take you to the gun club as a guest to check it out. Send me a private message. Check out the web site at greenvillegunclub.com for more information.

Hi, Smokey; I'm also a member of the GGC. Cowboy shooter, mostly.

If you want to join a club where you can have regular access to bays for practice, I'd look into SPSA or the Belton Gun Club.

Crunchy Frog - I have been to a few cowboy matches at GGC as a spectator. The amount of time, effort, and money that goes into the costumes, gear, and period arms is impressive. The food and fellowship is pretty good too.
