Hello fellow evil gun owners. I'm looking at gun safes. I don't have a ton of money to spend on one as I'm spending all my money on ammo. My budget is around 800.00 max. Theres two I'm looking at. This one http://www.libertygunsafe.com/safe_centurion.php and this one http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p...Id=4463006&cp=4406646.4413993.4414427.4414433 The field and stream is a little bigger and 100.00 dollars cheaper..I read somewhere saying you can open the field and stream with a big hammer, Im assuming by hitting the dial. Might be a bunch of crap though. Any feedback would be appreciated.

If you have an Attwoods, you can check out Liberty cases in person. I see the one you chose is built in China, I was looking at one at Attwoods the other day that was right at a 1000.00 and it was built in USA.

The one from your link does looks to be seemless like the one I looked at. It also looks a lot like the ones Cabela's sells.

I'd avoid the one from Dick's

Do realize that any safe can be opened given enough time. Mine is a rather old Liberty of around $400. I think its made of 10 gauge steel. The door could be popped open but its very close fitting which makes it hard to get a pry bar in. A side angle grinder would be easier. My solution is having a cheap safe and spend a few $$ more in enhancements. Mine is rather hidden and lagged securely to the studs in the wall, and a microswitch inside triggered by the door opening that one of the key lock levers will turn off. Any significant movement of the door without a key turning flashes an old flashbulb just sitting on the top of the safe and turns on a extremely loud alarm bell that will ring for about 15 minutes. The BG would be nearly blind from the flash and then half killing himself trying to get away from the bell. It sure put me on my tail when it malfunctioned on me early on. Still thinking about getting an additional nightvision mini camera for the safe location by X-Ten hooked up to my computer server which is always on to go along with the existing ones looking front and back outside the house turned on by movement. Google X-Ten for tons of economical selfinstallable security equipment. I get multiple hits from raccoons, cats and opossums every night. I zip through the hits at 4Xs speed about once a week before deleting.

With your budget, you might want to consider looking at Tractor Supply co. They carry some Winchester brand and Canon both of these brands are imports. Many members here and other forums purchase their safe/rsc from Tractor Supply. I am not saying that it is the only place but the are worth a look.

Buy the biggest and best unit that you can afford. When it comes to gun safes always get the bigger model to anticipate your collection growing. Even if your collection is small right now, it will eventually grow, and not only will it provide protection for your firearms but your collectibles as well.

Buy big. Collections tend to grow, not shrink (unless you're getting older and want to get rid of stuff).

Thanks to all that replied. Thanks opsman, I didn't even think about tractor supply. I went down there and looked at the Winchester 24 gun. Great price and a nice looking safe. I think that'll do pretty nicely. Thanks again. I know its not the best ,but for keeping out the kids and local ****** bags that might want to break in I think its a good buy.

Your welcome, I hope you enjoy your purchase, I and many others think you are correct, that it will keep the kids out and the smash and grab type thief. No safe is completely secure, if someone wants in it bad enough they will figure out a way. Now that you have one, one of the best things to do is not talk about it. No need in spreading the word that you have a gun safe in the house.

A determined thief with lots of time will get into your "safe" unless you have some sort of jewelers' or bank vault.

All you can hope to do is either slow the process or convince the BG to look elsewhere.

BD7 is right. Even bank vaults have been penetrated. Most RSCs will deter the average smash and grab burglar.

First line of defense is secrecy. Never tell anyone that you have guns or if they do know, that they don't know where you live. All you need is for someone else to talk and the druggie knows where to go. a1adbj gave some good advice which one should consider before buying from just anyone. Records for instance. Some clerk gone bad goes to their records and knows what you have, your location and the combination. Pick your vendor carefully.

Layered security is another. Secured room and out of sight? Monitored alarm window and doors? Burglar alarm? Video surveillance accessible to you via Internet or cell phone? Video recording devices? Reinforced doors and glass protected by some film. Zoned Motion sensors in the interior. Dog. Outdoor fence and lighting. Neighbors to watch your place. It all depends on how much you can afford.
