Ok, I am looking to spend $500 or less. I do not care about fire protection and I only want something to keep a common thug out of it. I will be attaching whatever I get to the wall and floor if possible so they can't just carry it away with ease.

It does not have to be large, I primarily have handguns but will have a few long guns.

I think I have narrowed my search to this

But I was wondering, if you guys had the same needs I have, and the same budget what would you choose?

Thanks!

I have seen that cabinet in person, while it would be good keeping kids out of, an adult with some simple tools (screwdriver, pry bar, hammer etc) would be in it in a few seconds.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

For under $500 you going to end up with something similar

The Stack-on and Sentry models in the $400-500 range are better than the cabinets, but you'll notice that they don't state the steel thickness which means it's probably 14 or 16 gauge and also they use a no-name lock. If you can get up to around $600 your best deal is the Winchester brand safe sold at Sams Club.

What I linked to isn't a cabinet, thanks for your constructive post though.

My pleasure. Listen don't shoot the messenger but with a screw driver and a hammer, to quote you, you'll be in the one you posted withing seconds too. Let's just say that for some reason you don't have those tools with an axe it will take a minute.

I'm just trying to save you the money that I wasted on my first safe, which I spent a $1000 on. After doing some research and checking my safe I realized I could break into it in seconds. Needless to say I upgraded it, now it's main job is to guard the side wall of the much better safe it is bolted down next to, and to store odds and ends...

Costco has the same safe for $499.99. You have to go to your local store to see if they have them in stock. I can't find it online at their site. Pretty decent value for what it is. they also have a much larger one for $799.99, however that one is rarely in stock and can't be found on their web site either.

Is it the same exact safe? From my research that safe at Sams is made specifically for them. If it is the same that is a heck of a deal.

The "Winchester" safe sold at Sam's Club and Tractor Supply is from Granite Security. They sell under a couple different brand names.

No chance I am going to spend $1200 on a safe, I understand in the price range I am looking at I am not getting something impenetrable, but it is better than just having my firearms in a closet or something.

Try calling your local locksmith that sells safes and see if he has some used ones from a trade-in; otherwise try looking for used ones from the gov't surplus folks - you'll get a MUCH better (and actual safe in certain cases), than what Dick's or others sell

Oneounceload's advice is good. As for the price have you figured out how much what you would be storing in there is worth? Do you expect to buy more valuables in the next few years?

The best thing you can do if you do put one of those cheap safes in is hang a sign in it that says: " Sorry - keep looking!"

Awesome, that's very helpful.

I guess I will just keep my firearms in a closet since a sub $1500 safe provides zero protection. While I am at it I am going to remove all my locks on my doors and windows, after all they can be defeated in moments as well so why have them.
