I know that there's a lot of threads out there about gun safes, and I know from reading them that I can't afford anything that can really be called a safe. I need to do something, because right now my rifles and shotgun are just in cloth sleeves, and are sitting in my closet. I know, not ideal, but right now that's what I've got.

Basically, all I'm looking for is something that can fit up to 10 long guns, with a shelf for a couple of handguns. It doesn't need to keep a determined thief out, it only needs to be able to lock and keep the guns out of the hands of untrained people.

Any recommendations? I have a budget of under $200. If that's too much to ask for that amount of money, I'm open to suggestions.

This is a big one.

Hey There:
I know what you said but it may be worth a look.
Mine is a Stack-on Elite.
45 guns, It is large and heavy. But at Sportsmans Guide, I got it for just under $1000.00 shipped.
It is a heavy dog. The door is thick and no one is useing a crow bar or any other kind of bar to get in it. Fire and theft is guarranteed by the company .
Electric lock that you can change the batteries in from out side. It is heavy enough no one is walking off with it. it also has rifle extensions that come with it for guns with larger scopes. Lots of shelfing that you decide how you want it. The door alone is over 4" thick. The fire rating is 1400 degrees.
I like it .......

every once in a while I see some school selling old lockers in the paper, you may have to get two to fit 10 long guns but they would do what you are asking for. You could bolt them to the wall and maybe add some reinforcements, that may even keep all but very determined thieves out. I don't remember the asking price but I think it was somewhere around your budget. good luck

Maybe consider one of those large "Ridgid" or "job-site" tool boxes that Home Depot or Lowe's carry for use in the back of a truck or job-site storage. They're made of slightly thicker metal than the el-cheapo gun lockers. They tend to have a pretty decent system for keeping people from just cutting off the locks, too (recessed). When you finally get the money for a good gun safe, you can use it in your garage or truck for tools, or use it as an ammo storage locker.

Check wally world, my dad got his safe there for about 200 and it wouldn't be "easy" to get into. Isn't going to stand up to a fire or a thief with 10 minutes to spare, but it will keep the kids and smash and grabbers out. It isn't that heavy, but he bolted it to the floor.. it isn't moving.

Stack-On has gun cabinets that are priced from $99 to about $299, depending on size.

Walmart sells a Sentry safe for about $249, but most stores only get a couple in store for Christmas.

I have the Walmart Sentry safe w/ electronic keypad. Great value and protection from little hands. It was a little more than your budget but way better than those cheap tin Stack-On lockers. I think the standard dial lock one is closer to your budget.

You might want to google safe cracking or like that, I saw a bunch of instruction videos for opening the Sentry brand gunsafes by using the coding that's found somewhere on the outside of the box. Fascinating stuff.Crack your safe using only wifi and a laptop.

There's also video demonstrations of just how easy it is to get into the typicla gun safe. Pretty amazing but disquieting stuff.

Your goals (10 long guns + 2 handguns + keep guns out of untrained hands) and your budget ($200) would probably be best met by a Stack-On 14 gun Security Cabinet:

Here is the product info:
http://www.stack-on.com/securityplus/gun_security/gc-914-5.html

And Academy Sports sells them for $179, but you can catch them on sale for less than that.

Be advised that these Security Cabinets don't offer much theft protection and no fire protection. I used the stack-ons for years (and still use them -- just not for my nicer guns) until I could afford something that offers a better deterrent to fire and theft.

Check re-cycling places

With many companies going bankrupt or downsizing, we have a a "re-cycling" place near us. They buy office furniture from these places and re-sell. I got a large fire safe that will hold my shot guns and hand guns and our important documents for $100. If you have such a place nearby, you may need to go multiple times to find exactly what you want, but it's just a suggestion

Bi-mart carries a gun box for about $100. You can't really call it a safe, but it is all metal and locks with a key. Certainly good for keeping guns out of the way and dust free, but not much else.
