OK, guys. Here's the deal. I've been whining and moping around the house for a couple months about how my wife gets new this and that without me grousing. All I want is a teensy-eensy new (to me) CCW-able pistol. My whining has paid off:p the wife has given me a green light to get a new gun.

...Sort of...

She says before I can buy a new gun, she wants me to buy a gun safe. (FYI: I keep mine in my bedroom closet, up on shelves (except for my long-guns) with ammo stored separately (i.e. no loaded guns).) Good grief...there goes my gun money. From what I've seen, safes are $300+. If she insists on them all being locked up in a safe, I would need one to hold about 5 long guns and three (soon to be 4) pistols.

So, I need recommendations. Machavelli would be proud of me. What I want is a box that locks and holds my guns. That's all. They aren't collectors, so I am not worried about fire retardant. I don't need it to do my laundry, darn my my socks, or bake a cake. Just lock. That's all the boss - I mean, my wife :D - wants.

I'm going to counter-offer if I get a small lockable fire-box type safe and lock up the ammo in there and then get a couple more gun locks for securing the guns. If that doesn't work, I'm even thinking about making one out of 1x6s - sort of a long, skinny foot locker.

Any other ideas???

stack-on and sentry are probably the cheapist.

There isa sentry model that sells for around $350 at Home Depot that is a lot better than a cabinet.

So, you want to buy a safe that will hold 10 guns? My advice to you is to buy a safe that will hold 20.

It's VERY easy to fill up a safe, both with guns and other valuables. A couple years ago I bought one that holds 38 guns thinking It will be a while before I'll fill it up. Boy was I wrong.

Us too. We're trying to figure out where to put a BIG gun safe in a LITTLE house. My oldest son gets our current safe.

For just plain old locked storage, Gander Mountain has those StackOn things for about $100.

Why not just put a lock on your closet then use the remaining $$$ to buy more ammo for your new gun :D

Then I would have to find the key & unlock the door every time I need new, clean undies. ;)

To think otherwise:scrutiny::scrutiny::scrutiny: eeeeewwwwwwwww.....

I like the stack-on idea. Maybe she'll go for the little pistol-size one @ $65.

As to if I *want* a gun safe, it's along the old adage of: if momma ain't happy, ain't no one happy:.if momma wants a gunsafe, I guess I want one, too.

GunVault is certainly great for your situation but can probably range around ~$200. Really, anything good is going to be $200+. Everyone knows that the cheaper it is, the easier it is to get into.

If you're looking for a full size gun safe, I can certainly help you a bit more in that area, but those are a bit pricey anywhere you go. They can look pretty fancy and you could coerce your wife into the idea by letting her know she can put her jewelry in it too..or whatever it is that she wants to keep locked up.

You can find a decent level of security in a cheap gun safe for under $300.00 that is way more secure that your current storage. Check places like Wal Mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, and sporting goods stores. Bolt it down, load it up (you'll be suprised how quickly it will fill up with valuables) and lock it up.

Winchester Safe from Sam's Club

I bought one of these from Sam's Club about 18 months ago. I paid $581 at the time, they were a stock item at the larger stores. I really like the electronic lock, no twirling a combo lock for me. Manufacturer is Granite Safe Co.
