Gun show 3 Model Dragoon Signature Series

I'm trying to find some information on this 3 rd Model Colt Dragoon Signature Series I purchased at a gun show. As you can see, it has a fluted cylinder. My question is how many of the 3 rd Model Dragoons from the Signature Series came with fluted cylinders.

According to the Fifth Edition of the Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Arms, page 42, the Signature Series (3rd Generation) Colt 3rd Model Dragoon was "also available in a steel frame, military four screw variation with blue steel backstrap, cut for optional shoulder stock, fluted cylinder, silver plated backstrap, and round trigger guard." No information was provided as to number of such guns produced.

I note the frame on your gun is not the four screw, cut grip frame military model, but the statement about the 'available variation' is confusing as to whether the variation was one single one or whether some guns had some of those features and other guns had different combinations.

The listing suggests referencing 'Colt Blackpowder Reproductions and Replicas - A Collector's Guide' for pictures and more information; perhaps the numbers you seek can be found there.

This is not a Walker, it's a 3rd Model Dragoon, is there anything in your book on that model?

Ah, rats. I got Walkers on the brain. The information I posted was indeed for the 3rd Model Dragoon, not the Walker. Sorry about that.

Ok, that helps to know it was offered with a fluted cylinder. It may take a Colt letter to find the number of fluted ones, thanks.

Thanks Shawnee, I picked it up at the Westland Gun Show were I was working a table.

You may not be able to get a Colt letter...

The 3rd. generation guns weren't made by Colt, but another company that built them under a license obtained from them. I believe that Colt did color case-hardened and blue the parts. Check with Colt's customer service department before ordering a letter. In any case I suspect that the fluted Dragoon is a scarce if not rare bird.

From the previously referenced Blue Book:
"These 3rd Generation models were manufactured under an authorized licensing agreement with Colt Firearms Company by Colt Blackpowder Arms Company - the same company (and many of the same craftsmen) responsible for the Colt 2nd Generation Colt revolvers. Although parts for the Signature Series were cast in Italy, they were fully assembled and hand finished in the United States using the proprietary Colt formulas for bluing and color case hardening. Colt Blackpowder Arms Signature Series revolvers are regarded as authentic Colt pistols. The 3rd Generation models have original Colt markings, including the barrel address and serial number stampings. There are no foreign proof marks on these authentic Colt models."

Watermarked letters from Colt Archive Properties, LLC., cost $300 or more and are only available within certain serial number ranges of the 1851 Navy, 1860 Army and 1861 Navy. The Dragoons are not included in the models for which letters can be obtained.

That's the guy. I was working at a table with a gunsmith friend and he walk up with the Colt. I did not have the full amount of cash with me to buy the Colt, so I paid him with a CC and what cash I had in my pocket. It did not come with a box, and the right grip has a small hairline crack. But never having seen a third model with fluted cylinder I made the buy.

Old Fuff.
I agree, wich is why I snag it any way I could.

That's the same guy who sold a NIB T/C "Patriot" at the Westland show in mid-Feb, for $275. I missed it by waiting for the guy looking at it to make up his mind. :banghead:

He had a table but I didn't notice the Dragoon then. Likely would have been out of my price range anyway.

Oh well.

The Dragoon was not on his table, he was trying to use it as trade bait for a german double shotgun my smith friend had.Later on he came back wanting to raise some cash so we worked a deal.:)

Both my 3rd generation Dragoon and '60 Army came with registration papers from Colt. These are considered actual Colts by the company. Not sure why people refuse to accept this... could be jealousy, eh?

It is a nice Colt, however there is a hairline crack on the lower right side of the right grip and it did not come with the box or any paper work.
