Went to the local Gun Show Saturday. A friend of mine, who is a machinist and has made a lot of "stuff" for me over the years free of charge, had asked me to see if I could find him a reasonably priced revolver chambered in 22 Mag.

I had perused almost the entire show and the only serious candidate I had stumbled across was a used S&W model 648. The owner was asking 600.00 for the gun so I passed.

At one of the last tables I stopped, there lay a Taurus Model 2-170049 .17 HMR. If you are unfamiliar with this model, it has a 4 inch barrel and is not stainless. It is sort of a lightweight version of the Tracker. The gun was kind of out by itself and it was obvious the dealer had not taken any pains to clean it up. It was dusty and the barrel and cylinders needed a good scrubbing.

I picked it up and checked it out. Single action pull was great, cylinder indexed properly and locked up tight. Double action was kinda gritty but usable. I asked for a brush and short cleaning rod, I swabbed the barrel out and the rifling was crisp and bright.

After a bit of dickering, I walked away with the gun for $200.00.

At home, a thorough cleaning revealed there were no blemishes in the finish and the double action pull smoothed up some. I paid special attention to cleaning the cylinders out. I made sure they were dry with no grit in them.

I have read these revolvers had issues with the cylinders binding after a few rounds of 17 HMR had been fired. I dug out a box of ammo and test fired the gun.

After a full box of ammo, I had no issues with the cylinders binding and the gun is surprising accurate. I had no problems at all with the firing and function. The empties were easy to extract so no problems there.

I plan on making a present of the pistol to my friend. He is a fan of the 17 HMR and I think he will be happy.

I wonder what the issues are behind the link recommending to not buy? IS that maybe the binding you note?

Looks like an interesting pistol.

Todd.

That's the fun of the hunt. Only things I look for at shows are kinda oddball. I buy old small ammo boxes that interest me, preferably empty. I'm in no rush so I wander and look. Mostly I part with my money with the beef/venison/Godknowswhat jerky seller.

You're a good friend.

That's going to be a great gift. I'm sure your friend will love it. I've had several Taurus revolvers over the years and they have all been excellent. Last year I found a Taurus Tracker in 22lr and it's as accurate as any S&W, eben shooting double action.

Oh wow that happens with other people too? It’s not just me! Also nice find on that Taurus I’m sure it’ll be a perfect gift.

Sounds pretty good. I have no experience with that cartridge.

I found a nice, three-inch stainless 941 last year in the LGS I frequent. I think it was made in the mid-1990s. Admittedly, I have yet to shoot it, but it looks and tests well. Very handsome, and in an uncommon barrel length, just like the 3-inch, stainless 1995-manufacture Model 85 I got the year before. These are good-looking revolvers that carry well, and that 85 shoots very nicely. I even carry it sometimes.
