Gun show find

Nothing really fancy about this SxS CZ Bobwhite. Picked it up today for half of what they usually go for. Not many deals at most gun shows. 20 gauge with double triggers. Five choke tubes. One minor nick in wood that you can barely see.
Now I just have to learn how to shoot double triggers. Only done it once at a Pheasants Forever shoot that was SxS guns only about 30 years ago, borrowed a friends 28 ga SXS and came in second on a shoot with it.

You did great. Most gun show “deals” I have seen were double the regular cost, not half. Granted, I have not been to one in years as a result. I have shot the bobwhite and it is a good gun.

Very nice. I recently bought a 28 gauge, with the CZ rebate it was $100 over what you paid.

My actual price was $450 for this gun, last I looked they were about $1100 at the store. I took a couple shots with it last night to make sure that she worked, little heavy on the triggers, but that is about normal for CZ shotguns. Feels weird shifting back to the second trigger, had to think hard to do it, too much muscle memory of single triggers after a lifetime of shooting. When weather improves a little bit and I am done with maple syrup season I will get out to the skeet range and try it out. If I can get a 25 straight, I will retire it for my kids and put it back into the safe.

Most of my shotguns are SxS, and all of those are double trigger. It's not a hard concept, the right barrel (front trigger) gets the most use in a double, the left barrel is for followup shots as the target flies away. You choke the left barrel tighter than the right for extended range (so the shot column doesn't spread too much to make a fatal hit likely). Keep your index finger as the only free finger, never use the middle finger for the second (rear) trigger, or you'll find yourself doubling a lot (firing both barrels). As soon as you fire the first barrel (front trigger), immediately cover the rear trigger and be ready for the followup shot. If you fear you are too far for the close shot, forget the right barrel and go straight to the left barrel (rear trigger).
You'll like the CZ (actually made by Huglu). It's a well built shotgun and the 20 gauge is light and swings quicly. I have a 12 gauge CZ with exposed hammers (Hammer Classic) and use it most for my clays shooting. I like having screw in chokes to select your pattern size. The other doubles I have are all fixed with modified/full chokes, mad some clays shooting a real challenge.

As for gun show finds, I found one I'd been looking for for several years, but it was beyond my price range. The other double guns I own are all older Savage/Fox Model B guns; one each in 12, 16, and 20 gauge. I'd been looking for a .410 bore to complete the group, and found one, looked brand new (they haven't been made since the late 1960's). Seller wanted $1600 for it. I didn't pay that much for the other three I have, combined. I had to turn it down.

Oh, I have two others, one early marked Huglu .410 SxS with a full and mod choke. The other is a 20 gauge SxS, CZ,
with choke tubes, both have the Prince of Wales pistol grip and single trigger. Took me a while, but I ran a 25 on the skeet range with the .410. It would smoke targets when I hit them, not much room for error. I called it my poor man's express rifle. I could put slugs through it and they would only be about 3" apart at 50 yards. A well regulated set of barrels.

I know the concept, but after a half million plus rounds of shotgun alone downrange it's takes a little bit to to relearn my trigger finger. I can swap to a pump gun and back with no problems, I have 40+ shotguns that I play with in all gauges except 16.

My best pheasant gun ever was a Breda over/under 3" 20 choked i.c. and full with two triggers. Loaded 7/8 oz of #6 join bottom barrel (front trigger) and 1 1/4 copper #5 in top (rear trigger). Very little got away. First shot on close jumpers, bang flop. Miss, hit with the second barrel. Runners and late flushers, second barrel.
Doesn't take long to train yourself trigger choice.
In all moment of weakness (or kids needing tuition money) I sold it. Too old to walk the marshes and cornfields now anyway.
Set it up i.c and full. You'll love it.

I wish I saw this thread a while back, I saw a couple bobwhites for $450 at my LGS in excellent shape but paid lil attention to them as SxS's weren't really on my radar but now I've been thinking a couple types of double guns would be cool to just own and shoot. They were in 20ga as well, might have seen a 12ga too.

Nice score! I didn't realize they went double $450 otherwise I'd have jumped, we have a guy in our trap club that shoots SxS's and gets a lil ribbing for it, he swears its no different than shooting an o/u

Nice looking shotgun.

Working double triggers is an acquired "taste". I grew up shooting a 28 ga side by side with doubled triggers and it became second nature to shoot the second barrel.

When I got in to competitive skeet with an over/under, that skill went away to some extent.

It is probably easier to remember to change triggers than to remember to cycle a pump shot gun though.

Nice find!Practice with the double triggers is a must.I missed a nice buck when I pulled the front trigger on my 10 gauqe sxs twice.
