I live in Kansas City, MO, which borders the state of Kansas and Kansas City, KS, logically. So, my location allows me to, hypothetically, attend gun shows in either state. So, my question is, if I were to cross state lines and attend a show, could I buy anything? I don't know what federal laws regulate interstate gun commerce. What are my options? Should I just stay in Missouri?

Well, you can't legally buy a handgun unless it goes through an FFL in your state of residence. Long guns depend on the laws of the two states involved. No problem with jerky.

Handguns are out unless you transfer through an FFL. There are likely some Missouri dealers at the show. I am not sure of the law, but it may be possible to transfer the gun through them and take it home or pick it up in your state later at their shop. I have done this, but I was a resident of the state where the show was and the dealer was out of state.

Rifles and shotguns are perfectly legal to purchase.

Good topic!

I'm in Minnesota but several of the gun show sellers are from Wisconsin. One of my favorite sellers is literally right across the bridge in Wisconsin. He carries a Minnesota and a Wisconsin License. If I buy from him at a Minne show, I take it home that day. If I visit his shop in Wisc, I meet him at his home in Minne to pick it up later.

Don't want to thread jack, but this is related I think. I am a resident of Ks., but have a driver's licence from another state. Have not gotten new Ks. licence yet. How would this be handled by a Ks. FFL? What I mean is, if I purchase a gun in Ks. where I now reside.

Thanks!

You can provide ID other than a driver's license to prove residence. Examples would be current gas or electric bills addressed to you at your KS residence. However, since it generally takes only a few days to obtain a new driver's license, it might be easier to just be patient.

Yes you can buy long guns and take them home with you. Yes you can buy handguns, but you have to have it shipped to a FFL dealer in your home state and take transfer from him/her. So go with a copy of your local FFL's license if you plan on getting a handgun. Everything else should be cash and carry.

Another good reason to have a C&R, if you're into the older stuff. Some dealers at shows don't want to bother with them, but I haven't had too much trouble. It actually means less paperwork for them (no 4473 or NICS required).

Get a DL where you live or an ID showing you are a resident of where you live.

I am a dealer and are not going to jail because you flaunt where you live. Duh!

That makes me a bad guy how?
