Here we go.
I have read things here and there about people who buy or otherwise come into possession of a gun in another state and simply ship it back to their home state.
They make mention that in doing so they do the following:
1 they select a specific delivery service to send the firearm because this company or this company's policy on either long guns or hand guns is more appropriate.
2 they ensure the shipment
3 they declare/notify the shipment is indeed a firearm
4 and since they notify that there is indeed a firearm in the shipment the customer must then ship it naturally one day shipping and pay a crap load in the process
5 or they do only a certain order of the above 4 options

So I'm left wondering. If you're doing this illegally to begin with why do any of the above 1-4 options?
So why not:
1 ship it with whoever?
2 why insure it? Just more money lost even it goes missing or is FUBAR'd
3 not declare anything; "it's just a present for someone it's not a gun or anything" If you notify them you must present them with a copy of your dealers’ FFL correct?--More time/money/hassle
4 ship it at whatever rate; standard for lowest rate

Unless... Like at airports they have some whiz-bang explosives detection machine that all packages are sent though. Don't think so.

Thanks just curious about this as it seems some logic is flawed here.

Frogger,

You are getting off on the wrong foot here.

We are all about the LEGAL use and possession of firearms.

If you bother to learn ALL the regulations concerning legal purchase and shipment of firearms, you can probably figure out a way to do it illegally without coming to the notice of authorities that are part of boards like this one.

My moral authority to lecture anybody about anything is limited at best, but I don't think anyone here is going to help you break the law.

If you're doing it illegally, do whatever you want. Just don't get too upset when:
a) the gun is confiscated
b) you get a visit from the feds
c) the feds take you to prison

If you're going to break a gun law, it's better to not involve the postal service or anyone else who can identify either you or the recipient of the illegally shipped gun, right?
