Been keeping my firearms in a Stack-On cabinet for years, but thinking about switching to a chest of some sort that I can keep at the foot of my bed.

Suggestions or ideas?

I know, get a safe, but I am not doing that till I buy another home.

An old fashioned cedar chest would be my pick. You can get some of the large ones with a pull out drawer at the bottom that would do a nice job of holding handguns.

A cedar chest is in no way a secure place for firearms.

Neither is my sock drawer, but there is always a gun in it. :D

Maybe the OP isn't concerned with theft and/or has enough insurance to cover his losses.

You might try one of those jobsite boxes like they use on constructuction sites. They're made of steel and they're lockable.

Take a look at the mil-surp 12"x12"x48" steel boxes with rubber seals and pressure relief valves. If you oil your firearms and add enough desiccant you should be able to store firearms for a VERY LONG time without worry of corrosion. This won't stop thieves, of course. But you can bolt them to the floor (use sealant on the bolts) and add locks to the lids to deter/slow the scumbags.

Steel job site box. Used they are cheap.

If you look around, you can find one that is not rusty or dented too badly.

Would anyone really want a steel job site box in their bedroom? Better yet, would anyone's wife let them keep one in the bedroom?:)

I guess that depends on the wife.

I'm sorry. I have no flexibility regarding the need for gun safes in this day and age. Buy a small one, a cheap one, an ugly one, a used one, whatever. You have to have a safe. There are no excuses. You don't have to store all your guns in it. You can set your own policy regarding what is loaded and what is out and available. But if you have even a small collection, you need to store it safely. Get a damn safe.

I got my sister a single shot 20ga and it just happens to fold so that it fits in a 120mm artilliary case that i put 2 lock pads on and the nice thin profile slips under the bed with ease and its pretty darn tuff i ran it over to be sure and they are waterproof.

Just don't put handles on it, you're already making it easy enough for someone to cart off all your guns. :uhoh:

My long guns are locked in a gun cabinet that is about as secure as a paper bag. I'll eventually be upgrading to a safe, when funds present themselves. Pistols are kept in pistol cases. My .45 is in a pistol case next to the bed, and my 9mm is still on layaway. :(

Ammo, I store it in an 81mm mortar case.

there used to be a safe company called Treadlock that made exactly what you are looking for. I think they are out of business but many of them are still floating around out there. I have a vertical unit and it was only about $250 when I bought it new.

Find a wooden chest that your Stack On fits in and secure it in there. Not the best, but better that either one seperately.

They make horizontal gun safes that look like cedar chests - The one I saw in a friend's house was steel inside an outer wooden box - and fairly heavy

Well, for several years that was me. Through a sheet over it, put a lamp and alarm clock on it, and it really isn't objectionable.

The reason why very few companies make gun safes that lie on the ground horizontally is because the door is the heaviest part of the safe and the only way to open the door is with a pneumatic strut. Because of the weight issue these safes usually use thinner door steel that stand up safes. American Security used to make a gun chest but they stopped. There also is a company that has a safe built into a bed frame.

I took a "Greenlee" worksite chest....drilled it....and covered the outsides and top with 2" thick planks..screwed from the inside. I had the planks cover the carry handles..and can "unscrew' if I need to move...and with a bit of cutting...got the planks to overlap the seams of the top to the bottom. when finished....I stained and a light varnish....had a nice looking "wooden chest" I coated the bottom...underside edge..all around with a heavy grease....with the ammo/guns inside...this chest is near impossible to move/pickup.....

I use an "OLD" style Arny foot locker with the snap latches replaced with heavy duty (2) padlock hasps. With a slip cover over it, it blends right in and with a few hundred pounds of ammo lining the bottom, it's not going anywhere without a fork lift.

Most folks aren't saying where they got their item or how much it was. I'm looking to do this as cheap as possible. The only way I'd spend big $ is on a real stand up safe.

What do you mean by cheap? For secure gun storage that usually means under a thousand bucks.

Steel job site box. Used they are cheap.

Yup. I use the M2472 Jobmaster from Knaack

--$500 on up used, more new
--All steel construction
--Weather resistant
--Excellent locking system
--Difficult to break into, particularly without destroying the contents
--Tougher than many safes
--One-man moveable when empty, but you can load it down with lead and ammo and/or bolt it down to make it very difficult to shift
--Mine is able to accommodate firearms longer than most gun safes can cope with. Even my longest flintlock long rifle fits.
