What gun storage options are there outside the home? Are any of the following realistic options?

Bank safety deposit box;

Commercial storage site; or

Range storage.

While this question is targeted at general advice, I am also interested in learning about specific storage facilities in Northern Virginia and adjoining Maryland.

Also, would it matter if the firearms are disassembled, such as only putting a lower receiver in storage?

Thanks

Do you really want to trust someone else with your guns? Unless it is a bonded strorage warehouse if they are stolen, you are out of luck. Storage places generally will not compensate you for theft or fire.

Massad Ayoob has mentioned storing handguns and the bolts of some of his rifles in a large safe-deposit box, particularly when he's traveling.

Very secure, but the obvious downside is that you don't ever want to store something in a safe-deposit box if you thought you might need it in an emergency, because banks aren't open 24/7/365.

A downside of storage units is that unless they are climate controlled, your guns had better be well protected from rust. Non-climate-controlled units can be really humid inside.

Safe deposit box you'd need to be careful. Not sure what might happen if you brought an assembled firearm into a bank. Maybe speak with the manager ahead of time on that one.

I wouldn't ever take an assembled firearm into a bank. The thrust of my question is I would like to take an "extra" AR15 (lower only) and put it in a safe place outside my home - just in case. I am looking for good suggestions for rental space to put it, no burying it in the ground. I shouldn't need quick access to this item - a days notice should due.

My hope is someone else has thought this problem through

I carry my firearm into the bank all the time....and loaded. It's usually in my pocket. Contrary to popular belief, there is no federal law prohibiting it. And, at least here in WA state, there is no state law regarding bank carry. Local laws are preempted by state law. Unless there is an official bank "policy" prohibiting, or an ingnorant teller or manager pushing their own agenda, there there shouldn't be a problem. Check your own state and local laws. YMMV.

To comment on the OP question. I recently had a conversation with a guy who bought abandoned storage unit contents, and he said he does from time to time find firearms in them. Don't forget to pay your storage rental fees if you go this route.
I also recently posted a thread about my brother in law coming into possession of a couple pistols found in a file cabinet he bought at an estate auction. Bottom line. Don't forget where you put em!!

I know a guy who has a pawn shop. He was telling me that people going out of town or going south for the winter will bring guns in and ask for 50 - 100 dollars. Most of these are very high end guns. They charge $9 a month and as long as that is paid the guns can go nowhere. The shop has secruity and insurance. Great way of storage. When they get back in town they pay back the 50-100 dollars and pickup the guns.
