Man kills intruder in gunbattle (Sacramento Bee, 8Jan04)
Second intruder fled after firing at 65-year-old, capital police say.
A 65-year-old south Sacramento man armed himself and fended off two attackers in his home Wednesday morning, killing one after a brief shootout before the second one escaped into the neighborhood.
Police combed the neighborhood around Wakefield Way but were unable to find the second suspect, described as an older teenage male wearing red and white shoes.
The shootout began after Ivory Grayson answered a knock at his door about 8:30 a.m. and found a man in his late teens who asked to see Grayson's grandson, Sacramento police spokesman Sgt. Justin Risley said.
Grayson told him the grandson wasn't there, then he noticed another man about the same age trying to hide, Risley said.
The two returned a short time later and Grayson grabbed his handgun before he answered the door, Risley said. The two intruders, both armed, forced their way in, and Grayson took cover behind a living room chair.
"A gunbattle ensued," Risley said.
Grayson and one of the intruders fired at each other down a hallway until Grayson shot and killed the unidentified man in a bedroom, Risley said.
Grayson, a former member of the military, returned to the front of the house, where the second intruder began firing at him until he fled, Risley said.
Grayson's 65-year-old wife fled into the back yard when the gunfire started. Neither of them was harmed, Risley said.
A handgun believed to belong to the unidentified dead man was found inside the house, he said.
Risley said investigators had not determined who is the registered owner of the gun Grayson fired. Though police are investigating the shooting death, Grayson would probably not face any charges, Risley said.
"This certainly looks like a case of self-defense," he said.
Grayson's grandson, who had a felony warrant for alleged check fraud, was interviewed by police, Risley said.

Looks like self-defense to me. Although I wonder what the real story is.
