My family and I will be arriving in San Antonio next week for our next duty assignment, and I am wondering about the gun shops in the area.

Are there any good shops around Lackland AFB?? I am looking to maybe trade out my XD40 for an XD9 and don't want to get the run around.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi my friend. Being as I am probably the closest person (that I know) on THR to the San Antonio area, I thought maybe I could help you a bit. The selection for actual gun shops is few and far in between. The only one that I know of at this time that has normal operating hours is Dury's on 37 south off of Hotwell's Rd. They've been around forever and, while their prices are higher than average, they usually do good business with their customers.

Doing a search on the SA yellow pages came up with this. According to the search there are more hidden around town, I will be investigating the locations myself as time permits.

Also, the Texas Gun shows is coming to the Live Oak Civic Center the 7th & 8th. The Saxet, which is the bigger of the two primary gun shows in town, will be coming later in Febuary I believe.

Good luck Sir.

San Antonio Gun Shops

Sorry, RudeMood, but I got you beat. I actually live in S.A.

Actually there are a couple of gun shops in greater San Antonio. I generally go to Drury's on Hotwells and I-37. They are open Tue - Friday 0900-1800; Sat 0900-1300.

I'm not familiar with the other places on the list RudeMood generated but even the Schertz address is in greater S.A.

There are also several firing ranges here. I live on the south side so I prefer to go to A Place To Shoot. Blackhawk is halfway to Laredo (OK it isn't really but it IS way out in the a** end of nowhere).

One warning about S.A. though, nothing is close to anywhere else. Nobody here thinks anything of driving 20+ miles one way to go ANYwhere. The good news is that we have a pretty good freeway system - when they aren't workin on the stretch you need to use  - so it doesn't need to take long to get somewhere. Also there are a LOT of things to do in the area.

Nagel's is pretty good from what I've heard.

Couple of guys that I used to work with would always recommend Drury's or Nagel's if we didn't have it.

Well to SA , Combat... - Here's the scoop - since I live here also. :D

1. Nagels - expensive and a touch of attitude. Lots of posturing. You can do better.

2. Dury's - prices are OK for a gun store but you can do a touch better on new guns. Used guns are ok and they have very friendly and competent service - recommended.

3. If you want a standard item or a trade:

a. The big box stored don't do trades - but some have decent store prices. Check out Academy, Sportsman's Warehouse - you do have to drive some but there is an Academy near Lackland. You do have to drive around town but it isn't hard. Bass Pro is expensive.

b. The Saxet shows - next one is Feb. 14. It is on the top of the city at the Alfarzar shrine on 1604. Google Saxet. The Live Oak shows - as far away usually aren't that hot. The Saxet show is also on the south side some months in the old Auditorium - google Saxet again. :)

That's the best avenue for a trade - Might check out AJC - I've traded decently with them - but bargain, bargain, bargain - remember there is still alot of Obamania at the shows.

The other stores - there is Ho's on Culebra - might see what he would do.

If you can - come join the San Antonio shooting scene. Almost every discipline is here on weekends. IDPA, IPSC, steel challenge, carbine, cowboys, skeet.

Look at:

www.rivercityshooters.com, www.krtraining.com - area FAQ, the Bullethole, www.texastactical.net for a start and come out.

Lots of service people shoot with us and we are very friendly to newcomers to the area.

If you look at the pictures on rivercity - you can see me. The older guy with the beard who looks well fed - wait - that's most of us.
