The wife and I are going to be visiting my daughter in Waco in Oct. with a side trip to San Antonio. My question is there any good shops where I could buy some AR accessories in this area? The plan right now is that they'll drop me off to the Cabela's in San Antonio while they go shopping at the outlets there but I hoping to catch one or two shops as well.

You might want to check you maps. Remember Texas is a big state, and the maps are smaller to fit them to a page.

The Cabelas is in Buda, on the outskirts of Austin, not in San Antonio. While it is not a far drive (20 miles between the outlets and Cabelas), if the women are planning on going to the outlet malls (yes there are more than one, all connected). The ones generally referred to are in San Marcos,#1 tourist attraction in Texas, by volume of people visiting, which is 50 miles from SA, but on the same interstate. Don't waste your time on the SA or New Braunfels outlets, they are a poor substitute. So you might be waiting a long time for them to come back, and then you would have to retrace your path to get to SA. I would suggest that you all visit Cabelas, then all go to the outlet malls, then drive to San Antonio if you want to see the river walk, Alamo, etc. Otherwise you will probably spend 1 hour as they drive back and forth from the outlets, plus what ever time they spend in the stores, so you could be stuck for half a day there, not bad, they do have a restaurant. If those are the things you must see. From Waco, you are talking about a full day, with lots of driving, at least 400 miles, with traffic close to 9 hours driving total, if lucky. You can get stuck in Austin traffic, and creep through town even in the middle of the day. But the good news, is that the traffic speeds are probably a little faster than you are used to when you get out of town.:D

You will probably have better luck at some of the Austin gun shops for AR stuff, as you will have to pass through that town. I don't remember much on I-35 between Austin and San Antonio that would suit your interest, and I have looked.

You might find some interesting stuff around Ft. Hood, and in the pawn shops and surplus stores around Killeen, only 60 miles from Waco. Find the places that cater to the troopers. Remember a lot of combat vets go through there, and they sometimes sell stuff for beer money that has been brought back from foreign lands. Plus they have the 1st Cav. museum, and I think the 4th infantry division has it's own museum also.

Hey Dodge, when going through Austin stop by McBrides gun store. Lots of inventory and cool stuff at good prices. It isn't too far off of I-35. Cabellas is huge and has just about everything, but it isn't a place for the bargain shopper. Still, it is very cool.

Big +1 on the Texas Ranger museum in Waco (just off I-35). They have some of the coolest firearms and weapons I've ever seen. It is a must for any gun lover.

There was one, but they had a big fire in 1993

I was waiting for that.

Cabela's has some pretty steep prices on everything I've looked at except for Buck knives and SOG knives (which were reasonable and right on par).

I'm not sure about their firearms but they seemed a bit pricey the last time I was in the one here in Nebraska, a couple of weeks ago, and the store employees didn't seem very knowledgeable.

Everything else was way overpriced so I'd personally avoid that store, but it probably wouldn't hurt to browse their clearance sections (stay away from their 'bargain basement', that's a complete ripoff, and probably priced higher than their 'showroom').

If you go to McBride's (not the cheapest), continue down Lamar to the Whole Foods HQ store - not gun world politically correct - but if you are a foodie - awesome store.

McBride's can get grumpy at times - depends on the staff member. If you actually get to San Antonio - I like Dury's as the best shop.

But remember the shops are not cheap. Both San Antonio and Austin have decent gun shows - google Saxet Texas gun shows to see if they are congruent with your schedule.

Praco Gun and Pawn has a huge selection of new and used guns, lots of black rifles and a knowledgable staff. I've bought guns from them since I was 16 years old.

Name: Praco Gun & Pawn
Street: 2201 West Waco Drive
Waco, tx 76707-3481
Phone: (254) 753-5511

There is also New york Loan and Clothier. They had LE supplies and an array of guns

New York Loan (New York Clothiers & Loan Inc*, New York Clothiers*)
806 Austin Ave
Waco, TX 76701-1920

Most everywhere else in Waco is crap. IMHO

Praco is pretty slick, I can't afford a whole lot in there at once and it's too far of a drive to cost-effectively put anything on layaway for me.

I haven't been there in several years, but there was a shop called 'Hewitt Gun and Pawn' on the outskirts, to the west I believe. It had a little bit of everything, as I recall, but again, I haven't been there since probably 2002.

There is a cabela's in Buda, south of Austin, no Cabela's in San Antonio (Bass Pro is in SA) I like Praco, lot of stuff, I thought the prices were reasonable.

The prices aren't unreasonable, my salary is(state employee). When I go there it's usually for reloading stuff and to browse.

I tapped out my fun budget for the next few months by buying a house.
