An email I got from GA:

Not really to not take the alarmist, scare tactic route but we feel compelled to email the hundreds of thousands of casual gun people who come here every month (in addition to the hundreds of thousands of gun nuts) that the election of Barack Obama is almost definitely going to bring changes to the gun laws in the form of new taxes and hoops for gun dealers to jump through, as well as permanent bans on individuals selling firearms themselves.

The days of being able to bring grandpa's old guns to a gun show and sell them off in an afternoon are probably going to be gone within a short amount of time after President Elect Obama gets into office.

Most likely the entire American tradition of the gunshow will disappear.


There is a lot of media attention today about people in a frenzy to BUY GUNS, because they are afraid that they won't be able to get them.

But for those of us with closets full of guns we don't and most likely will never shoot, guns that we've procrastinated selling, there is a genuine danger to our ability to be to SELL THOSE GUNS OURSELVES in the future.

So if you don't want to end up losing 30% of their value because you have to transfer the gun out through a gun dealer, get moving and sell them now.

The DEMAND FOR GUNS IS HUGE. We have record traffic on GunsAmerica, and the gunshows are a zoo.

Take the time and sell your guns now, at a gunshow, on GunsAmerica, or any other legal venue.

And remember, if you ship a gun to someone, it has to be sent to a transfer FFL dealer in their state. There is no legal way to ship a gun to an individual, unless they personally are a Curio & Relic FFL holder, which only applies to old and collectible guns that are specifically on the list at the ATF website.

Some states have restrictions on individuals shipping out guns themselves as well. Ask a dealer in your state. We do not give legal advice. It is your responsability to ship guns out legally.

Also consider buying ammunition for the guns you have. There will almost definitely be a new tax coming on ammo.

That's true, absolutely, but it doesn't mean that they don't have a good idea. I know I've advocated buying cheap guns to send a message to washington by flooding the NICS system, but I also support this idea... Sell some cheap guns to not only help arm people that want to become armed, but also to flood the NICS system and send a message to Washington!

Funny that I haven't heard the same from GunBroker, who have a much friendlier website and apparently don't need scare tactics to drum up sales. Maybe I just missed the memo.

GunsAmerica's web presence has been substandard from the beginning, and this latest effort isn't going to make me browse over there.

I think if nothing happens right away they fear the fervor will die down - most people are busy with their lives and families and have little attention span for larger issues. So pouring a little self serving gasoline on the fire doesn't hurt . . . . . them and maybe its not bad for the effort as a whole.

Look, I, personally, think guns should be sold without papers, without a background check, like hammers, machetes, crossbows, baseball bats, and any number of other potentially dangerous tools. Given the relative ease with which criminals in the UK, where handguns are totally banned, are able to get and use handguns, I think that the 4473 is nothing but a way for the government to snoop on the law-abiding, claim to be "doing something", and create jobs for unproductive bureaucracies.

That said, this IS a scare tactic e-mail.

Oregon requires NICS checks for all transactions at gun shows. There are six gun shows listed here, just in the next four weeks, in Oregon: http://www.gunshows-usa.com/oregon.htm

Idaho doesn't require NICS for private sales. There are only two. http://www.gunshows-usa.com/idaho.htm

California requires a background check, a 10 day waiting period (meaning that you have to pick up the gun from some third party after a week and a half), and a dealer transfer fee, usually $40, in addition to the $25 state transfer fee. There are 6 shows in California in the next 4 weeks, and there were 2 last weekend. http://www.gunshows-usa.com/california.htm

I am totally against any law that requires paper for private sales. However, these laws don't kill gun shows. They also don't lower gun values. Try buying a used gun in California, and see how great of a deal it is.

If anything kills gun shows, it will be the Internet. If anything adds to the value of a gun, it's the Internet. If I am an OCD collector who just has to have some particular variant of some gun to put in my closet, I can probably find it on the 'net -- and so can any other similar collectors, which drives up the price. In the past, what was the likelihood you'd find a buyer who wanted to dump all their disposable income on some odd gun? Collector prices in particular, but used prices in general, have gone up with the advent of Internet sales.

I have never seen a good deal on GA (not that there aren't any). I have always found better deals on GB and AA. I would never consider buying through GA nor would I sell through GA. My gut reaction was that GA is looking out for GA - which has been said previously. Kudos to GB and AA for not phishing for more business by trying to scare people into selling their firearms on their sites.

I received this E-mail,too. I've never used GA, but will occasionally browse the site to see what something or other is going for.
First, of course "gunsamerica is looking out for gunsamerica",no kidding, they're a buisness, what else would they be doing ? But nevertheless,they still are making a valid point, the S may very well be about to Hit The Fan. And to be fair, they did say you should sell what you wanted to sell, "at a gunshow, at gunsamerica, or any other legal venue".
I recently decided to partially limit my vulnerability, by going to a not-so-nearby local gunshow last wekend and selling my least favorite AK, a Romy G, for 1/3 more than I had in it, then went and bought a .357 revolver and a 5-shot 12 G. shotgun. Not waving the white flag, just acknowledging a possible storm approaching, and doing a little "tactical wealth redistribution".

This email really irked me. I'm done with that site. They send these stupid emails every so often. This one is over the top.

Where did they dream up this 30% number?

They are just trying to instill fear in their users for profit, and it's disgusting. I won't support a shooters organization that tries to scare shooters so they can turn a buck.

I have never sold a gun. Every time I accumulate a few another dadgum hurricane comes through and washes them all away. Guess I will have to start buying again.

That said, reading the GA e-mail brought to mind one of those ambulance-chasing lawyer bill-boards. I'll just add it to my list of other reasons not to use GA. I prefer Auction Arms, followed by Gun Broker, for on-line buying.

How many people who now decide to keep all their guns instead of otherwise selling one or two, agree to pay any retail price for ammo, including the newer loan shark rates?

Aren't these new exploitative ammo prices any different than falling for a gun website's sales pitch?

Aside from that, some people claim that pawn shops use the highest final sale prices on GunsAmerica as guides for list prices.
