My 58 remington has some timing issues. The cylinder dosent line up properly
with the barrel.Does anyone have any recomendations for a smith?

thanks, Texoma

Yeah, send it to Big Iron Barrels. :D

Actually, any gunsmith should be able to take care of that. Where did you get it? Maybe they could do it.

yeah i've been keeping up with that thread i dont think i would
send my son's cap gun to jules.:p

I got the gun from traditions over a year ago dont think they
would fix it.

Look up VTI gun parts. They carry a line of replacement parts for those. I am guessing you have an issue with the hand, probably not the bolt, since I have many spare cylinders and they all lock up tight and on time with a good hand. Sometimes you have to do a small amount of file work on the hands to get them to index correctly.

texoma, the hand moves the cylinder around to the bolt that locks it in battery. usually if it is the parts that cause the misalignment it'll be the bolt that can be adjusted by replacement or by shims if all the chambers are "out" the same amount the same side.( same side meaning all out to the right or the left. if the cylinder is too high or too low than it too difficult to repair and a new cylinder is needed. if only a few are off and a few are on than a new cylinder is needed too. other than the parts being worn the cylinder can come from the factory with the chambers mis-drilled. you can try a replacement cylinder since they are cheap and if it doesn't fix the problem send it back if ya ain't fired it. what make is the gun? some of the cap&ballers just come with a loose fit of the bolt to the cylinder notches. an over size bolt fitted can cure that...if an over size part can be bought. not all the replacement parts are a little over size so they can be fitted. an over size bolt can be fitted to move the chambers to one side or the other but....not up or down. being off up or down is a "new cylinder" fix. of course since it's cap&baller and balls are used the forcing cone can be widened and lengthened to help the ball find the center of the bore with less deformation and get an accuracy improvement.

Rifle,

All the of the chambers are off to the right. Its a Pietta and other than
the posted problem I havent had any trouble with it.I have had it about
a year and put 175 shots through it.I probably wouldnt have noticed the
cylinder being off but I noticed when loading that if I let the cylinder lock
in place then the rammer wouldnt enter the chamber. It will still shoot pretty nice groups just to the left a little.

If you are in Texas or close by as your name suggests, call Frank Smith, a Smith factory rep. His shop is in Commanche, Texas. Phone number is 325-885-2700. He has worked on various guns for me and for police departments all over the state for many years. Contact him and he can maybe give you some idea of what to do. He works on all kinds of guns and has contacts all over the state.

Texoma,

I re-read Rifle's post and he is on the money. I didn't remember until after I read it again that I had a problem with the hand on one of my 58 Remington's several years ago and found a US number for Pieta and called them. They sent the parts free of charge. Just a thought. Lot cheaper than a gunsmith and they aren't hard to change the hand and bolt on.

Pietta's US Distributors

Pietta's web site lists VTI Gun Parts as a Pietta distributor, so they can likely help.

FWIT, there's a post on the Graybeard Outdoors forum about a brand new Pietta from Cabela's with exactly the same timing problem.

Rifles' post makes a great deal of sense. Since this is an "older" gun with (not very many) shots through it, a worn hand or bolt is certainly the first thing to look for.

I went and looked the gun over some more and I think the chambers

were bored off center because the nipples line up perfectly with the hammer and hammerslot.

So I ordered a new cylinder and parts set.

thanks for all of the help every one,
Texoma

i think ya did the right thing tex. hope yer new cylinder comes aligned well. i have a stainless remington that fit an r&d conversion cylinder perfect and never shot the percussion cylinder or the spare cylinder i ordered with it. when i checked their alinment i thought,"crap". both cylinders were off the same amount the same place. i ordered a cylinder from cabelas where the gun came from and it fit perfectly.i sent the other two back fer exchange and they came back and aligned perfectly. they came from a good,"lot" or "run" of cylinders. i ended up with three cylinders fer the gun since i started with ordering a cylinder instead of exchanging. what the heck. i've adjusted bolts in pietta and ubert remingtons by ordering new bolts that came oversize. file them on the right side and that can bring the chambers into alignment if they aren't out too far. thing is most of the parts anymore come prefit and not really over size so they can't be used fer adjustment. dixie gun works still sells oversize parts like in the old days though.
