Did Tom Gresham's syndicated radio show "Gun Talk" run today, Aug. 6?

His show wasn't on the usual local channel where I listen.

The reason I ask is that my local channel is one of those Clear Channel automated corporate radio stations, so nobody is at the station, and even if they were, they wouldn't know a darn thing about what was on or why it was on, at least not until Monday.

But just curious if his show as on, and if this means my local station has dropped the show.

Yep, I was on

Yes, the show was on. Actually, if you have XM Satellite radio, it's on right now. <grin>

XM runs it with a three-hour delay.

What station do you listen to? Be sure to let them know that you miss hearing Gun Talk.

I listen to KWHN 1650 and 1320 in the Fort Smith area.

Like I wrote, it's one of those completely automated Clear Channel thingies.

In fact, when I called the station to see what was up, the computerized answering service just plugged me into whatever program was on at the time.

In the past when I've called for whatever reason, I usually get some underling who says, "Sorry, I don't know for sure. Could you call back when the manager is in?"

Not sure, exactly, when the manager is in.

But I will do my best to get hold of them tomorrow.

I've just sent emails to all the "managers" listed on the KWHN web site.

This station has, ahem, a history.

For a several week period, this station couldn't synchronize its own local breaks with the commercials that run on Gun Talk.

It would run the Gun Talk commercials, and then break into the local commercials.

Sometimes, there would be nothing but continuous commercials running for up to an hour at a time.

Numerous phone calls did nothing to rectify the situation...just a lot of "Uh, I'm sorry....I'm not sure why it's doing that.....could you call back when the manager is here?"

Eventually, after several weeks in a row, they apparently figured out which button to press.

I'm highly unimpressed with my local talk show station.

But when you're a small market station in a very small market, and don't have any competition around, there's not much of a price to be paid for incompetence.

hillbilly

Hillbilly, I wish you luck.

The folks at that station have decided to drop Gun Talk. Said they could not find any advertisers for it. Strange, since a lot of the stations which carry the show sell out the advertising.

I offered to fly up there and take their sales people on calls, to help them sell the advertising. They were not interested.

What I have found is that if a local retailer calls the station, wanting to advertise on this show, the station is happy to run the show. Otherwise, I'm not sure the stations much care what listeners want.

<shrug>

<<I'm highly unimpressed with my local talk show station. >>

Yet another reason that Sirius and XM have a combined subscriber base of more than 11 million.

Tom Gresham's Gun Talk is on Sirius channel 144, and XM channel 166.

Funny.................when they couldn't get their local ads synchronized with the national ads on Gun Talk, they seemed to have plenty of local ad buyers.....enough to fill up 45 minutes of air time at a pop.

Well, I've listened to my last KWHN 1650 broadcast, and I'll let them know.

I've just prices XM and Sirius radio packages.

Nothing personal, Tom, but I'm just not willing to shell out $100 a year for the satellite radio subscription, plus the additional cost of satellite radio recieving equipment just for Gun Talk.

So I suppose I've listened to my last broadcast of Gun Talk for the short term future.

Pity. I really liked that show.

maybe you can get it it via streaming audio on the net. check www.radiolocator.com and see if there isnt a talk radio station that broadcast over the net and carries gun talk.

of course, knowing where you live you might not have the bandwidth to handle it.

For the time being, it looks like I'll have to shell out the big bucks for satellite radio, or try to find time to listen to the cached version at work, or just go without.

I'm out in the boonies, and stuck with only dial-up service for Internet.

If satellite radio is too expensive, there's no way we're shelling out for satellite internet.

KWHN can burn, burn, burn for all I care. :cuss:

Robert Bell, or some such crap.........some talk show devoted to combating the "medical conspiracies" that the eeeevil drug companies are forcing upon us for eeeevil profit's sake.

I'm really torked off at KWHN right now.

I got a "sorry for the inconvenience" message from Ralph Cherry, the manager. He said they dropped the show "in hopes of a show with more appeal and the chance of attracting a sponsor."

I wrote him back and said that I was dropping KWHN in hopes of a radio station that would play what I wanted to hear.

I really, really, really hate Clear Channel and its evil corporate radio with its cookie-cutter programming and its completely idiotic, inept, personnel who can't even synchronize the local ads with the national ads.

I hope they go extinct soon.

Okay, I just remembered a possible option.

For Christmas, I got a handcranked (or battery operated is an option, too) emergency radio that does all sorts of bands, including shortwave.

I know I've been able to pick up all sorts of weird stuff on it before.

Next Sunday, I'll get that little jewel out, crank it up, and just spin the dial on all the different bands, hoping to find Gun Talk.

hillbilly

It is not broadcast near where I live. When I can, I listen via the web at KBNP Radio 1410 in Portland Oregon which carries the complete show. A link is on the Gun Talk web site.

Thanks for the streaming audio suggestions, but again, that is just not an option for me.

I live out in the boonies, and I get internet only through a very slow, small dial-up connection.

Right now as I keyboard these words, I'm running at 28.8 KBPS, if you can call that running.

I'm so far out in the sticks (on purpose) that DSL is not offered out here yet.

I've tried listening to radio via my slow dialup connection before.

My connection is just too small and slow to keep up. The show starts and stops. My connection disconnects frequently. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes just for the sounds to start.

Same for videos. I cannot watch videos on my home computer either unless I want to wait 50 minutes or so for one small video to load through the dailup, that is if the compouter doesn't disconnect itself halfway through the download process.

I've got slow dialup, no DSL, no satellite internet and no satellite radio.

I'll try the emergency radio with all sorts of bands on it next Sunday, and see if I can find it on some other channel that my regular radio just can't receive.

hillbilly

I don't know of any shortwave broadcasts, but that doesn't mean someone isn't doing a rebroadcast without our knowledge. It happens.

Anyone who spends much time in the car would appreciate satellite radio. For me, it's well worth the cost of two Big Macs per month.

If you know someone in the area who has a gun store, car dealership, etc., who might want to support Gun Talk, have that person call the sales manager of the station to ask about advertising on Gun Talk. When they try to switch him to some other package, he can tell them that GT is why he would advertise.

Could be interesting.

The internet market is interesting and it is a money game ultimately. Web sites tend to be so top heavy eating up so much band width with motion and sounds and so forth. The market is gradually making good access impractical with dialup. Back when I was dialup only, since I'm cheap, I also had the same frustration as you. As they say, I feel your pain.

hillbilly - you seemed to imply that you had a fast connection at work. If so, and there's a downloadable (i.e. not streaming) version, which is what I think "cached" is referring to, then perhaps you could download it to portable media at work and listen to it on your computer at home.

Of course, this is dependent on a) what sort of transportable media you can use at work and access at home, and b) whether this is considered "fair use" and okay with Mr. Gresham.

Absolutely, this is okay by me.

Download it and play it to the chickens.

There are some "Gun Talk" discounts availble which you may hear on the show.

(Not available to chickens, or in states which prohibit fun.)

There are satellite high speed internet providers available anywhere for a comparable price to dsl/cable.

+1 on GunTalk and +2 for the archived programs, Tom :)

I heard on the radio today that they are bringing Guntalk back. According to what they said, they got lots and lots of calls and therefore are bringing it back!

I don't get to listen to the live broadcast so I listen to the archived shows. Unfortunately, the archive is out of date so I haven't been able to listen for a while.
