I took advantage of Midways sale on bullets a couple week ago,and I ordered a couple boxes of Speer 100gr boat tail soft points,so I went to buy some more powder yesterday, and was shocked that I couldn't find 4064,or 4350,but I didn't want to leave with nothing,so I bought a jug of the H-Hybrid 100 V.It was priced right($24),and the loading data on the jug claims great velocity(3,100mv) in the 243 with the exact same bullet I have..I wasn't expecting to buy this powder,so I knew nothing about it..I looked on the computer yesterday, and this powder seems not to be very well liked, some complain about temperature sensitivity, some about accuracy. Some people are very pleased with it,but just as many are not..I won't be shooting max loads, and these will be hunting loads..Have any of you used this powder, and what is your opinion of it?

I use it in a .243 and a couple other calibers and my only issue with it is that I only get good accuracy results from it using max loads. For hunting that's where I am at anyhows so no real issue...another thought is that maybe if I used hotter primers I would have better results at less than max loads...

Start at least 10% below Hodgdons start load.
I used some in a .257Roberts. Start load blew primers, and max loads were not even supposed to produce +P pressures (same as factory.243). Velocities were abnormally high, indicating excessive pressures.

Even at 10% below start loads, I got cratered primers so I fed it to the azaleas.
Haven't bothered with it again. Win 760/H414 is available as well as H4831, IMR4350, and others.

My rifle has a history of digesting loads significantly higher than manuals recommend as it has a so-called 3" chamber.
I may have gotten a bad lot#, but it made me leary of it.

The term "Spikey" is applied to H 100-V .... when developing a load it will be fine and showing no signs of pressure ... then the addition of a tenth or two could turn into pressure signs or a "spike" of pressure ... there seems to be a lack of linear pressure build compared to some other powders ...

It will give good velocity with the right load and the accuracy can be there also .... just be careful when working a load up ....

That is one reason I like IMR 7828 in the .243 Win .... it is easy to work with without spikes ...

I worked up to 42 gr.,and am getting good accuracy,with no signs of pressure.I don't have a chronograph,but I figure they are running about 2900 fps,or so.

Barrel length?
ETA 40.5 gr would get you estimated 2900 fps out of hodgdon barrel with an energy efficiency of 23.05%
42 gr gets 3000 out of same barrel with efficiency rated at 23.74%

With my 20" barrel on a 100 gr pill with a load of 46.8 gr of h1000 I'm running 2940(ish chronoed)
According to my app with hodgdon barrel data, the load should produce 2990-2995. Some loads lose speed per inch of barrel faster than others, but this is food for thought.

I have a 22 inch 1 in 9.25 twist.I probably could have went higher, but I was getting tight groups,so I figured I'd call it good enough.I figure 2900-3000 is good enough for my needs.

It seems 100V sits between 4350 and 4831 so it's fairly slow and well suited for the 243 Win. I never used it but my shooting/loading buddy bought some during the shortage and tried it in the 257 Bob and it did very well. I say give it a try and a good worker up to see.

From what I've read about it it's named Hybrid because it's a combination the technologies of spherical powders and extruded powders. It's a ball powder but shaped in extruded powder geometry with very short granules for good metering. My buddy had better results using a magnum primer, you may or may not.

Definitely! I just figgered you were selling yourself a little short on the 2900 estimation if you weren't shooting a short little barrel (18"). That 100 gr pill at 2900+ is quite sufficient for loads of fun :) .

I have tried it in 243 and 300WM since both use similar slow burning powders. In 243, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't my favorite either. As always, work up in your own firearms, but it lived near the maximum charge. My only problem was that the workups with 100gr Hornady SPBT's seemed to plateau at 1.5 moa. Other powders like IMR 4350, 4831, or 7828 will group a little closer all else being equal.

In 300WM, it was frustratingly awful. A simple workup with IMR 7828 corrected that.

I had a similar experience as GooseGestapo. I got some not long after it came out specifically for 25-06 and had a stiff bolt on ejection when I got to near midrange loads. No real pressure sign prior to that. Didn't have a chronograph then.

I haven't touched it in years but may get it back out for another caliber one day. I had OK accuracy with a couple of the near mnimum loads in 2 different 25-06 rifles. So, I think it has potential as long as you use a little extra caution.
