H&K bringing the G36 here to USA...

competition really wasnt nearly as fierce 5 years ago as it is now.. with things like the ACR, SCAR, and XCR only now beginning to offer features in design that the G36 had a decade or more earlier, it really was one of the first of the ultra new polymer rifles..

Very good point; kinda explains the rifles' dominance and total replacement of the G3 in most places that could afford it. Sort of like the STG44 in a way; about a decade ahead of its time, and eventually emulated if not directly copied by all sorts of folks worldwide.

the only rifle i really like thats been designed in the last 25 years is the CZ-805 bren
Yes. Oh God, yes! I really hope their civvy variant makes its way over here; hard to see how that's possible these days, but here's to hoping. Beretta's ARX also looks quite formidable on paper (though people seem to hate it instinctively on average for reasons I don't fully understand) with a fast-switch ambi setup and switch barrel configuration.

The AUG is very cool as well and still completely relevant, but isn't nearly chunky or plastic enough for today's cool kids (seriously, from the Tavor to the ARX to even the G36, the side profiles seem to be getting fatter each year :D). Not to say those other rifles aren't very comfy or don't handle well (they certainly do), but the graceful AUG looks downright emaciated next to them :D

it is quite true that HK is in the business of building image.
Total coincidence they're in video games as much as they are, too (less so nowadays, since everyone else has gotten in on the action ;) )

well, as i said ive never used the CZ-805, but if i had to get a rifle designed in the last 25 years, id definitely go that route even without personal experience or handling one first, id even buy one sight unseen.. why?.. ive never fired, seen, or handled a CZ product that wasnt pure gold, they refuse to release a product that isnt made to very high standard and strict quality control.. they easily match HK and sig in quality but remain affordable which puts them above the other two for this reason

as for the aug, first thing that comes to mind when i think about it is "ahead of its time".. why?.. the scope was a bit goofy, but needed to make do with almost no sight radius, even in the 70s that thing was screaming for a red dot sight that didnt exist yet, and if they did then not in any large scale.. with a red dot those things really come alive.. and they had quick change barrels which are only now becoming all the rage.. so out of all new designs its by far the oldest, most proven

barnbwt, about your commend about the aug not being as bulky and plastic enough for todays younger individuals, thats actually the reason i dont like the ARX.. i think that thing looks WAY too plastic and bulky

but SCAR, CZ805, ACR mechanically are very similar to the G36 and if im not mistaken use a very similar short-stroke gas system as the G36, which was derived from the AR-18.. so they could be considered evolutions of what the G36 was, even though the 805 is the only one that like the g36, has an interchangable magwell

I've got 30 round USGI mags from the Vietnam era that weren't new when I got them and have never given me any problems and are still going strong despite having very little finish left. I just don't see how the AR mags from any decent maker are a problem and doubt anything could be 4-5X more reliable to match the price increase of "advanced" mags.
