Help identifying a firearm please.

I think its a 1st model 3rd addition 1888-1897 ???

Can not confirm is rim or center fire and is black or smokeless

H&R 38 American Double Action on top strap
Nickel,Octagon,21/2 barrel,nickel trigger guard, No comp name address on barrel,hammer has a spur,black hard rubber grips,5 shot, free wheeling cylinder,S/N 4084, manual ejecting, pull pin release, Leaf main spring.

All first models are black powder guns. 5 shots indicates 38 caliber.

It's caliber is .38 S&W center fire, if it were rim fire, the model name on the topstrap would be "THE H&R BULL DOG". Your nickle trigger guard puts it as pre 1897. The serial numbers on these were in batches and as such, do not help with dating. I think you have your date about right and it's a black powder revolver.
