I have a friend with an H&R Handi Rifle in .357 Mag- There is a small amount of play between the upper and lower. Will this affect accuracy much? If a rifle starts doing this will it continually get worse?

Thanks

Is it possible the locking area is dirty? It should be clean and dry.

Do the numbers on the barrel lug match the last three numbers in the receiver's serial number?

My question would be did he purchase new, i've seen a lot of home gun smithing done on the Handi and much of it poor.

there should be a bit of play in any break-open type action, else it would bind. As long as it's not excessive, it's fine. How much play are you talking about ? The play only exhibits when open, and solid when locked shut, yes ?

It may have a small effect on accuracy. But then, most break action rifles don't shoot all that well unless you reload and only neck size the brass.
