I have noticed that H&R has started making a 357 handi Rifle. I can't determine what type of 357 this Handi Rifle eats. Buds has one listed, on the header it says 357 rem mag. In the specifications it says 357 S&W mag. At the H&R website it says 357 and nothing more. Does anyone know what type 357 the handi Rifle eats?

I have a .357 Handi Rifle and it will shoot all .357 Magnum and .38 Special cartridges. It won't shoot .357 Sig or .357 Remington Maximum since these won't chamber. I like mine a lot. It is accurate and fun to shoot.

Great question. Seems like some product descriptions are adding to unnecessary confusion.

The NEF Handi-Rifle chambered in .357 Magnum will shoot the .38-Special and the .357-Magnum® cartridge just fine, right out of the box!

I think the confusion is that the original .357-Magnum® was developed by Smith and Wesson, while the .357-Maximum was a development by Remington and Sturm-Ruger and was a totally different cartridge length.

Keep in mind that the H&R or NEF Handi-Rifle chambered in .357 Magnum has very long chamber leade and throat area and you can actually ream the rifle to .357 Maximum chambering in about ten minutes.

I've left mine alone and not futzed with the chamber and shot Silhouette strength powerhouse 180-gr .357 Magnums thru mine at some pretty strong velocities with excellent success!

Bottom line: It is chambered for the .357 S&W Magnum cartridge which also allows shooting plain jane .38-Specials thru it all day long. You can even load .357-Magnum loads meant for a T/C Contender and be just fine.

To Shoot the .357 Remington Maximum cartridge it would require reaming out the chamber length to accept the longer case of the Maximum.

The rifle in question will be a plain Jane 357 s&w magnum.

I've oned a couple of these over the years and they're pretty fun. I usually converted em to maximum though

In my >357 Handi~~~~~~~~~~~~~

140-gr cast LSWCs @ 1000-fps = accurate. I'm talking accurate. And cheap as shooting .22 rimfire but wiff a thump...

158-gr JSPs @ 1200-fps is like shooting a laser beam thru a .357-Magnum Handi-Rifle.

180-gr XTPs pushed to T/C Contender loads in a .357 Handi-Rifle is real fun and deadly on game up to white tail deer!

Too bad they will likely be banned if Feinsteins proposed bill makes it into law. Stupid aint it?

You should come over to the maximum darkside. From a 24"bbl I'm pushing 180 g ssp spitzers 2150fps! And still retain the ability to shoot mags n special

I have a .357 Handi. I bought it for my son to learn on. I make him reload his own ammo with my help and then we go to the desert and shoot them up. We have a ton of fun and I am actually looking forward to the day he out grows it and it will be mine again! They are that much fun. It is very accurate and well, "handy" to tote around the desert.

I like mine. I got it on a whim, not really expecting it to be more than a plinker.
I was very pleasently surprised. i had a little 4x burris scope sitting around and put it on the handi-rifle. When I do my part it will shoot 1.5 - 2 inch groups. Note: mine has a distinct preference for 158 gr jacketed hollowpoints. It will shoot lighter 357 loads and 38 specials but not as well.

I'm a handi-rifle nut. got 'em in .204, .30-06, and 3 in 12ga slug versions. A .357 Handi would be awesome pard to my revolvers, especially if it had a mount for my reflex sight! A great truck gun combo.

nitesite, that barrel looks like a Talo 18 3/4". Did you have it added, or did you get that rifle as is?

I bought the Talo rifle at a small local gun shop, where the owner had installed the Handi-Grip stock. I have the original stock set as well. Kinda neat, ain't it?

Yes, it is. ;)

I recently reentered the Handi Rifle club. Bought a Talo 357 at a local gun show, and sent it in to get a matching barrel in 44mag;

Now here is a Handi-rifle nut & that`s not all of them, if H&R made it I have it, guess I am going to have to get the new .357 & .44 mags..............

I bought an old H&R 12 ga Topper at a garage sale for $30. Bought a cut down .357 mag barrel from a friend cheap. I fitted it to my receiver and it makes a fun little plinker. He had a scope on it. I took the scope off and put sights back on it. Shown below with the cut down 12 ga. barrel.

Oh, but I kept a couple of aces up my sleeve..... I also have a plain 12 ga Topper, and a Huntsman .50ml/12ga slug set.

If you are a true Handi-rifle/ NEF slug gun fan, I urge you to look into the ATI(advanced technologies inc) collapsable M4 style stock/fore end. I have 'em for 2 slug guns and one for my turkey gun.

I'll be keeping an eye out for .357 and .45lc versions now.

Hey Nitesite,

How does that stock work out with the iron sights. I have the same rifle and would like to add that stock if the irons are still usable.
