H&R / NEF Single Shot - Thoughts?

I bought one in 30-30 after a friend talked me into it. Well I was very happy with it shooting lead bullets, but never impressed with jacketed loads. Jacketed loads averaged about 2-3 inches at 100 yards. Tried different loads and once in a while got a good group, but could not repeat it. I recrowned the barrel, beded the forend and changed scopes. Nothing seemed to help and started thinking I was doing something wrong. As a last resort, I decided to slug the barrel. Slugging it gave insight to what might be the problem. The bore measured .308 at the chamber end and tapered out to .3095 at the muzzle. Well this is not good and wonder if this is a common problem with 30cal NEF barrels. I wonder if this was a fluke or a common manufacturing problem with their barrels. It could be that someone forgot to measure the bore before attaching the lug and chambering. I think I will try calling NEF and see what kind of deal if any they will make for me on a new barrel. I quess if they at least promise to have the bore taper in the right direction I'll buy a new one.

Im feeling these rifles...

One in .22 Hornet with a turned down barrel, and duracoat finish would be a decent backpacking rifle. Also Id want one in .460 rowland (S&W?). With that Chambering I could fire everything from .45 colt small game loads to .410shotshells to long range big game loads. The price is great and there are smiths that are doing good work on these guns.

great little truck guns ,, just need a little trigger work... cheap , dirt dosent bother it,, probally should pull mine out from under the seat and dust off the dirt, knock off the rust check the scope,,,aw hell then it would just start felling special..223 by the way

Doc2005,

Everything you say about the TC is true. However, the NEF is a $105-$255 rifle. Replacement barrels are mostly under $100.

I think the most expensive one is the .30-06 stainless from Wal*Mart that runs $250ish.

The TC rifles are MUCH more expensive, and their barrels are also much more expensive. TC is better - but you also pay double or triple. Apples and Oranges imo.

NEF is the poor man's TC. You can get a rifle for under $200, and as time goes on, for very little money - add calibers for only the inconvenience of sending in the receiver. For those folks on a budget, but who like singleshots that are pretty darn accurate, but low-cost and want to have a number of calibers...that's the ticket.

So it's still not clear to me if the reciever fitting is required for purchase or if a person could buy the barrels willy nilly without having to screw around with sending in the receiver. I'm just not sure what sort of intricate fitting could be required for a single shot, especially one built in the age of CNC. As an aside, is NEF absorbing the shipping cost for the trip back? Final question, can you order your array of barrels and rifle so that you don't have to send it back or are we stuck with whatever combinations NEF deems market worthy?

Having read the graybeard forums which are jam packed with the most NEF information you can imagine..it isn't a good idea to use a barrel that wasn't fitted for your receiver. Not worth it.

If you send in a receiver, you can get as many barrels you want. That should save the agony of being separated from your rifle for a few weeks. :D

I own a Handi Rifle in .243 cal.
Has the bull barrel.
Shoots 100 GR. Win Super x real nice...Walmart- Cheep.
Gun didn't like rem. or fed ammo...
Have it sighted in at 2 inches high at 100 yards.
That's gets me out there quite nicely if needed.
I have a Bushnell 3-10 scope on it.
Painted everything flat black with a non shiny clear coat.
Have shot 17 coyotes with this in 2 years.
Hopefully will shoot a nice deer this year with it.
I love the low recoil of the heavy barrel.
I am very supprised at the damage it does to coyotes.....
Sure it will kill deer with a placed shot.
I do need to add a bipod to it next.
Love the gun......:what: :what:

Welcome, earl. Its obvious you have good taste in guns. :D

Glad to have you with us.

I have an NEF in .223, and it has dis-assembled many a varmit. Now I've got the jones to get a barrel in .204 Ruger.

yes, the bull bbl ones are heavy, but they always work, are easy to clean, and yes , for about 50 bucks, you sen in your receiver, and they will fit any bbl you want to it. You can also ask them to do a trigger job, which they will do free of chg. their 45/70 with a 26 or 28 inch bbl is quite impressive.

I have several of the handi rifles and have found them accurate and reliable. I have changed the stocks to Choate's except my Hornet with the laminated stock. Rifles are light and I would recommend you get the hb #2 in anything above the 25:06 level - the 45/70 will smack you similar to a Mosin M44 so you had better enjoy recoil. The 22 Hornet and 223's come with sights and you will add the scope base seperately - Weaver #82 $6 so you have the best of both worlds. My wife shoots her 22 Hornet with the youth stock and had found it is one of the few rifles she can hold in standing position comfortably beacause of the light weight. Inexpensive rifle you don't mind kicking around with as you are not going to hurt it ot the value. Beware there are 2 shotgun receivers and only one can be used as base for the rifle barrels. H&R's flutted bbl's are really nice. They are all backed by Marlin warranty.

I have a Handi-Rifle in .243, 24 inch Heavy Barrel, with a 6-18x50 Bushnell Banner Scope. This is a sweet shooter. Hope to bust some varmints (coyote's) with it soon. I am very happy with it. I am also planning to have it fit with a Black Powder barrel.

Well, I have never been a particularly big fan of single-shot rifles, and as such I am somewhat uninterested with the NEF/Handi-Rifles. That being said, they are good, inexpensive rifles that seem to be capabable of exceptional accuracy. My bias is simply that I prefer to have more than one shot, and I find shooting single-shots gets sort of boring, but thats just my opinion. Certainly nothing wrong with them, and if single shots are your bag, I say go for it.
