I recently got this neat H&R Model 622 .22LR revolver and I have been told that it is unsafe to shoot high velocity ammo, is this true?

Thanks,
Jesse

There are differences of opinion. I say they will hold the pressures in the cylinder. The problem lies in the action. I would feel comfortable with many rounds up to standard loads. CCI Mini-Mags can be used safely for hunting purposes. 22 caliber shotshells are fine. The newer high velocity, increased pressures loadings are NOT for most any older 22 period. If you want to shoot the hot stuff, you do need a stronger firearm. Rugers, S&Ws and even Commanche I 22s come to mind. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear. There just isn't a easy answer. I shoot standard Wal-Mart brick 22s in mine regularly, I have shotshells and CCI Mini-Mags for times that I need them. I simply would not target shoot with Veloci-Raptor high pressure, high velocity ammunition. It is like asking a Totota Echo to race at the Indy 500. That is not what it was designed for.

H&R -Hot ammo

Josey---Are the Veloci-Raptors a lot higher pressure loading than CCI Stingers? If so, by about what % or velocity. I shoot Stingers in all my old H&Rs with no problems but, like yourself, use the Wal-Mart boxed Federal by the thousand. a dud here and there but good cheap ammo. And then there is Rem. Thunderbolt. The King of defective ammo. Where do you get the Raptor .22?---Thanks, Tom

Those "hot" .22 loads are still within pressure specs for the .22 LR, the makers simply use a lighter bullet (29-36 gr vs. 40 gr) to get higher velocities.

Folks may be thinking of the old H&R revolvers from the 1890's or early 1900's, but the 622 is a modern gun; it was made 1957-1985, long after .22 LR high speed was on the market and some of the higher velocity stuff was out the end of that period.

The 622 should handle any .22 LR.
