On my next batch of 308 win I thought I would try H355 instead of H4895. My dillon should meter the H335 better and the cost is about the same as the H4895. I'll be just plinking with the ammo in a 1919a4 beltfed, so I keep the powder loads on the low end, under 42grs for sure maybe a little less after I chrono some rounds. The question I have is some of my reloading info suggests to use magnum primers, some don't, is this indeed required. What is your personal experience. The bullet I am loading is 147grn fmj bt and I would normaly use winchester large rifle primers
Thanks in advance

there are some manuals that suggest ball powders need a mag primer...

I use all winchester large rifle mag primers and work up loads. ball or stick powder, doesn't matter....never had a problem.

The key thing is to work up the load...for the most part, you won't hit the max before you find a truly accurate load. especially with a 308.

I've loaded various ball powders including Win. 748, Win. 760 and maybe (I don't really remember) H-335. I always used Federal 210M (large rifle match) primers and didn't experience any problems. I really doubt you need to use large rifle magnum primers in that size of a case and, in fact, your accuracy may be better with large rifle primers. You could try both and let accuracy be your guide.

The 1919a4 is a field of fire weapon ( with the barrel moving inside the shroud and attached parts moving inside the reciever ) and will never be a tack driver, so my concern is reliability and economics. While I still try for accurate loads, at a 1000 rounds an outing I try to save were I can ( lite loads saves barrel wear) and its kind of fun walking the rounds into the target with tracers every 4th round for accurate target acquisition.

That sounds like a lot of fun. If tack driving accuracy isn't a big concern, I would see no reason not to use large rifle primers. In the cartridges I've done comparisons on between large rifle and large rifle magnum primers, there has usually been no appreciable difference in accuracy anyway.

I use H-335 in 30-30 behind a 150 grain slug. Standard primers. It's my most accurate 30-30 load.

However, I have't tried it in really cold weather yet. IF standard primers are going to give you greif, it would most likely be in cold weather. Just something to think on.

Oh yea, my buddy uses H-335 in his 30-30 and it's way more accurate than he is. ;)

I had to prove that to him at the range last week:D

FWIW, I use Remington Large Rifle Primers for .308 Win in an M1A. The load is 43.0 gr. H335 behind a 150 gr. Remington spire point. Groups are quite good. Right now, I'm working to find how big of a sweet spot (powder range) the load can vary since I mostly target shoot. I regularly weigh a charge of H335 and it holds either at the set point or within 0.1 gr.

Your lighter load of 42.0 gr. sounds right. The magnum primers are to enhance powder burn, so large rifle primers should be adequate for your rifle use. Sounds like a great day with a 1919a4 beltfed to go through 1000 cartridges!

I am not sure what kind of tempatures would denote cold weather but that should be no problem, on those days I go to my indoor gun range and shoot hand guns. It is nice to see the weather getting wetter here in the northwest, now I can play with the tracers I loaded without setting a forest fire. I am curiuos to see how far out of the barrel they will light off at. A 1000 ( four 250 round belts ) rounds and a couple of people who are not aquainted with this firearm is a great time. I always offer the other people at the rock quarry who are shooting to "give it a go" as well. It's not full auto but with the crank fire handle it's darn near. I am always trying to bring more people into the fold.:D I see that wideners has military large rifle primers on sale that indicate to load useing magnum data, maybe I'll give those a go, 5000 for $70.00 +hazmat+shipping, kind of expensive though. Oh well, it's the only bad habbit I've got
