I was thinking of using a 47 grain load of h4350 with 150 grain bullets in my 30-06. Will this load work or will it be too light? It will be my first reload. I want to start a little low. Thanks for the help.

What load manual are you using?

You can go to www.hodgdon.com for the online reloading data center, it will give you starting load and max load for H4350.

I would suspect that your load is pretty darn light. It will shoot, but really light and it may not have any accuracy. Do a little more research in the load books. Find a better starting load, probably 10 grains more than you are thinking.

And welcome to the Forum.

I can up it, I just trying to get an idea on how it will shoot. Would there be any risk to having a load around that light?

I load 54+ grains of H-4350 under a 180 grn bullet in the 30-06, so your certainly not to heavy. Go to the Hodgdon site & see what they say. I'm sure they have data for that combo, just start on the low side. When I load 150 grn bullets in the 30-06 I've used H-4895.

Welcome to THR, ewg.

It's unlikely that your light load of H4350 would be unsafe, but it may burn dirty for lack of enough pressure to obturate the case to the chamber. Hodgdon's site lists 56gr of H4350 as the minumum load for 150gr bullets.
Do you have any other powders in your collection to choose from?

No that's the only one I have currently. I'll just have to up the load. It will be no problem. Thanks for the help tho. I'll keep the forum updated on my load and results.

I be leery of a bullet jammed in the barrel with a load that light. Too low and you risk a squib.
I`d start around 54/55gr and work up. The std rule of thumb is to start ~10% below max, that is 6gr low with a 60gr max load. A lot of shooters I know start 5% low.

I'm just waiting on a scale. Not bein able to start reloading is Like not bring able to scratch an itch

My .02, 47 grains is way to light...I believe hodgdon says 56-62grains min to max if memory serves. Go to a Barnes and Noble and grab the 2010 Hodgdon manual at the magazine stand. The best one I use!

I use H4350 for loading all my 165gr to 180gr 30-06 ammo. I feel using 4350 with a 150gr bullet is a bad idea. 4350 is too slow a powder with such a light bullet IMO. It's my opinion you will get better results using 4895, Varget or 4064 with a 150gr bullet.

H4350 is at the slow end for 150 grainers, true, but I just used it to load up some 125 gr bullets in my 30-06 (for fun) and I had two groups (non-consecutive) in my ladder around MOA (4 shots 100y). While you might get ultimately better accuracy with another powder, H4350 is just fine. If you have it, go ahead and try it. If you haven't bought any yet -which given that you are just starting is likely - grab a few different powders and a few different bullets (brands and weights) and get experimenting. Just start at the minimums on Hodgdon's site assuming you have a modern 30-06.

I`ve been loading 59.5gr of IMR4350 under 150gr Hornady Inter-Lokts` for at least 25 years and have found it to give better accuracy and velocity in both my present `06`s then either 4064 or H4895. H4350 isn`t in my limited experience as good a choice. You can`t beat ~3000fps and 3/4" 5rd groups with a sporting rifle. This is a heavily compressed load though.
This isn`t to say other powders won`t do better in your rifle, but that 4350 isn`t as bad a choice as it may seem.

Well I loaded cases with 58 grains of 4350 and 150 grain seirra hunting bullets. Can't wait to test this load. Will post the results. Thanks everyone.

What rifle are you shooting? IMR-4350 is too slow for M1 reloads, but you should be good to go for just about anything else.
