cant seem to find my normal .30-06 powder (H4350) in stock around here right now and need to work up a few loads. one of the local stores, however, has IMR4350 on sale for a dang good price. i was wondering if these are pretty much interchangable? would my 58 grain load of H4350 with a 165 gr bullet fly the same?

i also have TONS of Varget around. anyone know of a load that might mimick the H4350 load? i just didnt think one would due to burning speeds. but thought i would ask!

thanks!

I asked QL to give me the results of 56.5gr (case full) of both Hodgdon IMR 4350 under a middle-of-the-road 168 SMK. It surprised me by saying they were only a coupla hundred psi different for essntially identical velocities.

YMMV....

VARGET's a whole different story. You need to DROP at least 10% from any previous 4350 loading to "minic" the slower 4350.

i did the same in QL and was kinda shocked as well. i know that the two 4350's have almost identical relative burn rates but ive learned to go by real world info more and more! :) im keeping my fingers crossed that someone has done this or one of the gurus will know for sure.

yeah i figured i was poop outta luck on the varget. i just dont want to resight my scope and the 58 gr. of H4350 is a tack driver for me.

I recently went to my shooting supplies store and found everything hodgdon and IMR have minus both 4350's which are my 165 go-to powders for '06. I bought a few pounds of H414 and have kinda wondered what QL would perdict with WIN cases CCI 250's and 165 Accubonds, 57.5 gr powder charge(25" bbl/.30-06). I will stock up on both powders after I return from NW Ontario. I shot the last of my pet loads on a 100-400 yd range and figured I could find one of the two, guess the ban on "ball" powder has been lifted.

57.5gr H414 in a 68.2gr(H20) case behind a 165 Accubond hits 57,000psi/2,930+fps (in a 60,000psi cartridge). ....kinda pushin'/past the engineering limits IMHO. :what:

That said, H414 is a superb powder for the`06. And for only a loss of 50fps you can drop a grain to 56.5gr and operate at a slightly less insane 54,000psi. (Hodgdon says 50,000CUP)
http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

Personally, I'd drop another half grain to 56.0 and call it a day for (very) little additional loss in velocity -- and a much more civilized 52,000psi/2,830fps

NOTE: My lawyer says you never read this, and I was never here.
Take care......

.30-06 is rated to 50000cup/ 60000psi. 57000 psi would be sane for me. Thanks for the data! Hornady's book listed a max of 58.2/3 behinds a similar bullet. I tend to have less problem with BT's and Ab's that I do with SST's.

Not much difference between the IMR and H versions of 4350. However, the same cannot be said of 4831, with IMR4831 being somewhat faster than H4831.

I prefer H4350 over IMR4350 but I have used both. With a 168gr MatchKing I load 58.0gr H4350 but drop the charge to 57.0gr when using IMR4350. I've found IMR4350 to be a little bulkier so it will fill the case a bit more. If I recall correctly I get just about the same velocities from those 2 loads. (I think)
