I got home from hanging out with friends at about 12:15 last night. I walk into my house and was sitting in my office when the light in the garage came on. (it has the little motion sensors on the floor that turn on the light, or stop the door from coming down if somethin is in the way.

I usually don’t go look because toads jump in all the time and light it up, but I decided to send the toad out and close the door.

Well I go out and step around the car, and see that the lid that covers the big steel trashcan, that we use to hold bid seed is off. (it was left off after filling the bird feeders) I hear a nibbling sound, so I walk over to investigate fully expecting to see a tree rat having a midnight snack. I was shocked when I saw a huge rat eating away. The rat just looked at me like "what the he!! are you looking at". I first thought of dispatching him with my carry glock 23, but soon decided that would not be the best idea.

I left the little invader to enjoy his last meal. I ran upstairs and started going through my collection to figure what would be the best weapon to defend myself from this home invader.

10/22 quiet, but scoped and it is not going to be good a night.

High Standard .22 magnum der, well good pistol but loud and simple sights and only two shots,

ruger MKII well good option, but did not feel this is the tool for the job, more of a target gun,

Sig Trailside, I did not want to soil this fine plinker with a body on it, so it was out

taurus 94 .22 revo, good gun but just did not feel right.

Marlin .22 lever action, antique, was my grandfathers, too special for this task.

My father's old Remington scoremaster .22 rifle, can't use that ancient tiny scope, and probably not zeroed.

My old savage .22 auto, well my first rifle, but scoped and the range would be too close, so It was no good.

then I saw the weapon that would rid me of the invader.

My ruger 22/45, I quickly loaded the mag and headed down stairs to face the evil that awaited me.

As soon I opened the door I heard a loud scratching sound Just as I rounded the back of the car he was getting out of the can, and heading out of the garage. I lined up and fired twice, both rounds found their mark. The foe ran a few more steps before succumbing to his wounds. I quickly collected up the shell casings and disposed of invaders body.

Funny thing is I fired two .22s and did not even wake up anyone at my house.

So how did I do?

What would you have done differently?

Do I have a good legal defense since I shot him in the back on my property.

Just remember this phrase"I was in fear for my life." :D
Good weapon choice..although this is why supressors should be legal....
I have a similar story for a few years ago....
2 am...I wake up to find my wife not in bed....and the hall light on..I go to see whats what.....I see my step son, step daughter and wife standing in front of the fridge.Step son is holding a broom and a small cardboard box.I think"this doesn't look good."I ask what's going on,my step daughter says"there was a squirrel on my bed!"She felt some movement on her bed and truned on a light to see an evil red tree rat on the foot of her bed..she screamed,it screamed and took off.She wakes my wife, who goes next door and gets my step son.So now the little devil is behind the fridge on a shelf.Son says he's gonna knock him off w/ the broom and catch him in the box..fat chance I say,and I don't feel like chasing this thing around the house all night."no body move."I say..I go and get my Crossman pellet pistol(the one that looks like a Python).I say "ok stand back"I let him have one round COM..He does a Jackie Gleason death move..."DOOOH"with his little arms outstreched.I then empty the gun into him and he falls to his death. After about 3 seconds we all start laughing uncontrolably..my wife says"it was like a Charles Bronson movie.."I'm the big hero now.
ps this stuff never happened when I lived in the city... :scrutiny:

Problem is that when you shot him, he was disengaging and your life was no longer in danger. Don't know how the DA is going to see this one.

Hope the talking heads don't get ahold of this ... the antis would have a heyday.

;)

EDIT: LOL Sorry major sleep deprivation. What type of animal did you shoot.

Seems to me like you needed an excuse to shoot your gun and the rat gave it you.

You said it yourself: it was LEAVING your garage. So why shoot it?
You killed one of a community of millions producing no impact on the fact your neighborhood is full of them and will remain so.

That's why I feel it was useless and just entertainment for you.

NOTE: this is written without any animosity.

Sounds like you could be any one of a few dozen members.Kinda funny, the intruder almost got away as you himmed & hawed over weapon choice.

LOL,good job though!

In Florida, he's also covered under Animal Control law, which specifies either .22 or .410 only for killing animal pests.... good choice. (I bought a .410 after I found this out - I didn't want to be illegal for blasting a coon with my 12GA.) ................... any excuse for buying another gun! :)

I honestly never thought about this (obviously, as I used a .45 in my link above)...

Anyone know about NC?

wait a sec, I told my buddy that hunts, and he told me that what ever animal you shoot you have to eat. (humans excluded as well as dieased animals)

Should I eat my Kill?????????????????????????????????????????????

he looked healthy right up untill he recieved two 36 gr doses of lead.

Rats are generally disease carriers, I wouldn't eat him unless he was the last meal on earth, and then he'd be mostly charcoal.

This is why I want a bolt action .22. A short doesn't sound much louder than a fire cracker. Get a hollow point, and there you go. I don't know if anyone makes hollow point .22 shorts though.

this is the reason you should havea walkther p22 withthe can option ps, i wouls have used an iron sight 22 rifle, quieter and with iron sights at the range you were using less likely for a miss. we have an old springfield 22 that has at least a 28 inch barrel those Aquilla (sp) 60 gr subsonics are flat deadly on rats and raccoons if you get a head shot. rabbits and the like fall over dead too. if it is a big coon, ie as big as my lab, they get pop[ed with a 38 hbwc out of a marlin 1894, just a pop and they die.

Your tactical tale is nothing but a thinly veiled excuse to brag about your gun collection. You have injured my self-esteem and unneccesarily caused me to feel jealousy. :neener: :D

Well, you shot him and now his family will greave and seek retribution. Better load up more guns.

If he'd been in out house, he'd be wearing a collar and named by now. My wife adopts almost everything.

Amazingly, I had a very similar experience yesterday early evening. I was mowing my lawn, and as I was heading to the strip of lawn to the side of my house I saw the hugest (Is that a word?) spider I have ever personally laid eyes on outside of a zoo, and I live in Florida where there are some pretty huge spiders around a house all summer long. This spider looked like something that belonged in a tropical rain forest somewhere. It was about three and a half inches long with a substantial body, sitting in his spiral web about face high to me as I was approaching it on my rider mower. Good thing I was looking ahead, or I would have had it on my face, and would probably have crashed my mower into a tree. Anyway, I stopped the mower, retrieved my Walther PPK CO2 powered BB gun (semi-auto) from the house, took careful aim from about four feet away and after about five rapid fire shots, it crumpled up and fell dead to the ground. I think it was a justified shooting, considering its size, but am not sure it would hold up in court.

My granny dispatched her last 'home invader' with a lead pipe.

Granny: 1 Raccoons: 0

Note to reader's don't mess with a WVa woman seperating her whites. :scrutiny:

I need to get some of those colibri .22's I have never them before

I am guessing the promer powered ones will not cycle the action. Guess bolt and revo ammo only.

oh and the whole hame invader thing, I stink at typing and hardly ever proof reed.

Reading thru the list of gun choices I feel you could use a few more .22's. :D
