As a Tennessee resident my typical gun buying experience is to go to the store, pick out my gun and stack it with a couple of boxes of ammo on the counter. Then I fill out the forms, wait 30 minutes, pay for my purchase and walk out with my gun & ammo. Nice and easy, no issues.

Last Saturday I bought a handgun across the border in Alabama. No carrying it home. It had to get shipped to my local FFL...Oh, was that a weird feeling!

I do love the fact that they make it as painless as possible. Every Wednesday the Alabama gun shop runs the load of purchased to a hardware store on the town square in the town I live in. The hardware store does not sell guns, but is a FFL and does the transfer. There is no shipping charge and the hardware store only charges $10 for the transfer.

So this time it was buy Saturday and leave the store with extra magazines and ammo. Go to the hardware store on Thursday, do the transfer and walk out with my gun.

It must really suck to be in a state that has a mandatory waiting period!

Nothing like the feeling of walking into a LGS, swiping your credit card and walking out 15 minutes later with a new Sig P226.

What's with the 30 minute waiting period in Tennessee? Customers in some states walk out immediately after filling out the forms.

As an Idaho citizen with a concealed carry permit I walk in pick out the gun I want, buy dies and shell holder, projectiles, fill out the form pay for my stuff and walk out. No phone call.

There is a 10 day waiting period in California. If you buy a used firearm, it has to be held 30 days to check to see if it's stolen before the 10 day waiting period can begin

It usually takes 30 minutes to do the background check.
Something's wrong there. Are the computers slower in TN, or something? Or, is it the people?:p

Seriously, why? Background check takes less than 5 minutes down here, without a CHL. With CHL, pay and take home instantly.

Hey, don't feel bad, it is a 72 hour wait here in Illinois for a handgun, 24 hours for a rifle, and that's for residents. Not as bad as it once was (5 days). But sill a pain.

They consider it a cooling off period, so you won't just buy one and go shoot someone (LOL) like you wouldn't use any of the others you own (LOL). There is no sane reason for the waiting period once you are approved by the NCIS.

In Montana with a Concealed Carry Permit, I walk in, purchase handgun, fill out paperwork and walk out. No fuss at all, should be like that everywhere.

Different system. We use an internal Tennessee State system. Sometimes it is quick. Sometimes it is slow.

Try NJ, where I might need to wait a few months while the FFL holds the gun I won at auction on GunBroker while waiting for the town PD to complete my handgun purchase permits!

I figured they would be close to ready as it has been 50 days and the state law states permits must be granted within 30 days....well it turns out they are still processing April applications. Not so smart of me.

AZ, approx 15 minutes without CCW, 0 minutes wait with CCW. I worked in a gunshop right after the Brady Bill went active, and that 5 day "cooling off" period did nothing to stop crime, and everything to aggravate customers. When AZ went InstaCheck, life got much better.

A 30 minute waiting period should be required on all firearm purchases. This gives the buyer a chance to shop for ammo, shooing supplies like gun cases and holsters and cleaning supplies thus running up a bigger bill. By spending more money they are giving the economy a boost.

I couldn't imagine not being able to just walk out a few minutes later with my new firearm purchase. No permits of any type necessary, can legally carry in any manner I desire on my person, in my car, in my bank, I just love my Arizona! All we need now is the "gun free zones" removed, but that appears to be a Federal thing.

I can't help it, but I wonder if some of the posing anti trolls that sometimes lurk on sites such as ours would be interested in what the above discussion makes evident, with regard to more "reasonable, sensible laws - that EVERYONE supports"
Now I'm sure all those fine young men killing folks in Chicago, Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit, etc. are going through the same wait periods and background checks...

as someone once said, "some men you just can't reach..."

Well, the new 4473 takes longer to fill out...;)
I remember when it was 1 page. Then the Paperwork Reduction Act went into effect, and it went to three pages, two pages explaining the Paperwork Reduction Act!!!

I remember it took me 45 minutes to buy a gun one time. 5 minutes of 4473/ccw check...and 40 minutes of accessorizing the purchase with cleaning supplies, ammo, magazines, reloading gear, holster(s), and the installation of night sights.

The next one I bought I had to wait 5 minutes to get the results from the background check...Louisiana get on the ball and do the paperwork to make it so that you don't have to do the call if you have a ccw.

Idaho, in and out

I can't count the number of times I've headed over to the local gun shop at the beginning of my 1/2 hour lunch break, picked the gun, made my purchase, and got back before my 30 minutes was up. I have my CWL, so it takes about 5 minutes off the total time to buy a gun out here.

I don't understand the waiting period mentality.
