Please respond only if you have fired Turk 8mm Mauser in you Hakim.

Just picked-up 700 rds for $20 soooo I'm thinking of turning the gas valve off and then turning it CCW until I get enough gas to operate the action. Reading posts going back 3 years, many fired the 8mm Turk with no problem. I suspect the key is to ajust the gas valve to its proper setting and that any "ruined" Hakim had the gas valve wide open.

Interesting you started this thread tele .. I am hopefully in a week or so getting my first Hakim ....... after long thinking about it. Shot a while back with some guys who had some ... they rocked!

I have plenty of ammo but certainly would be keen to pick up any tips as this thread progresses .

Are the settings a bit like when I set up my L1A1 ... which runs IIRC on 3 very well .... is Hakim similar? The one I have coming was bought for a hanger rather than shooting . I intend to remedy that!

If you go to this search on the FAL files forum, you will discover that a great many people fired the Turk 8mm Mauser ammo in their Hakims with NO PROBLEMS during 2001. They properly ajusted the gas valve and only complained about how dirty the ammo was. I have a VERY STRONG idea that those Hakims and FN49s that were damaged was due to the fact that something was very wrong with their rifle. Either a rough chamber from rust or they didn't know or have the means to ajust the gas pressure. Reading old books on the subject, the FN loading of the 8mm Mauser was (and still is) considered "hot" and is mentioned as an example of the need to ajust the gas valve. I'm willing to bet my newly refinished Hakim that its all a matter of gas ajustment and not the rate of burn of the powder or the "hot" loading of the Turk ammo that has caused the "problem" if any in fact really existed. It could be an urban legend, and 4th hand information passed on and on. My chamber is smooth and my rifling sharp and mirror bright. We will see tomorrow when I take 70 rounds of Turk "silver colored bullets" (those on the web say its too hot, MG ammo) and ajust the gas and work my way up. Anyone wanna make a bet that I won't bring back nothing but a dirty rifle (and in one piece?):D

Hmmm, its been an hour and no one has voted. Where's all the 1st hand experience at?:scrutiny:

The guys I shot with were FalFiles members ....... I may drop in over there or do a search later.

Hope to hear you are right .. intact but dirty gun!!:p

Actually .. I do wonder how many here have one ... seems a rifle that is not in very high ownership. Intriguing piece IMo - I look forward to playing!

Hmmm, almost 12 hours since this poll was posted and yet just ONE vote and that one is a favorable experience. We have close to 10,000 members which is a pretty good size for any firearms forum yet still no first hand KABOOM experience. I might be shooting Turk ammo alot more from now on.

Gas Settings: Valve pointing towards you (6 o'clock) full open
Valve pointed to 9 o'clock...gas shut off. First click ajustment starts at about 7-8. You need a tool to ajust the valve, an M1 carbine gas piston nut tool works fine as does a home gas turn-off key:D
