Friend has a rat problem on his new property. They are good sized to say the least. Is there handgun, preferably an auto, that can launch .22 shorts?

Ask him to get an air rifle. Pellets at 1100 fps kills rats just as good as a 22.

Sure. Beretta 950. They used to make one with a 3" or so barrel. Called it a campers companion or some such. If you can find one it'll set you back $250-300. High Standard made a couple, too. The bargain model will cost about the same as the Beretta and the target version will go for $600+. Benelli makes a nice Olympic target model for $1200 or so.

If you're thinking that the 22 short will be quieter than a LR, you'd be right...but you'd need a Db meter to actually measure the difference. You'll still need hearing protection and the neighbors will still hear it.

A bolt, pump or lever action loaded with CB caps is gonna be the quiet way to do the dirty rats in.

Smith & Wesson made -- and still makes, for all I know -- a Model 41 in .22 short. I believe there are several other makes of autopistol designed for the short; all of them being competition models for rapid fire target shooting, and all of them going for four figures.

These strike me as rather extravagant for rat shooting, but perhaps your friend is a wealthy man.

The .22 CB caps are about as quiet as an air gun, since they fire
at about 550 fps. .22 Shot could break the sound barrier - not very
discreet. however, you should have a good backstop for the
20 gr. bullet - it would carry much further than a pellet .177 / .20
or .22 cal.

AIr Gun example I have

Crossman H9 Deluxe hand pump pistol $60

.177 pellet @ 525 fps - NO MORE than 8 pumps is
stressed... I got it and didn't know enough about air guns
Lack of research / that they also come in .20 and .22 cal.

However when Magpies come around and perch/sit in certain
places I take my shots and they don't come around so much anymore

THe traps sound like a good idea.
except we have lots of squirrels and I leave them alone
They have a better P.R. dept. with the bushy tail and all.

Myself, I'd try to find an old H&R or High Standard 9-shot revolver. Very accurate guns, and they don't care if you're using shorts, longs, long rifles, CB caps, birdshot, etc.

Pistols designed for International Rapid Fire were chambered in .22 short until a recent rules change that requires .22 LR.

So all of those Olympic grade pistols in .22 Short are pretty much useless now. If you poke around, you might be able to find one at bargain basement prices.

:)

I second the Aquila Colibri recommendation. You don't need to mess with .22shorts.

Volquartsen makes a 22 short conversion of the Ruger auto.

Otherwise, just use a revolver and shoot whatever you want. I've been known to pot a starling from time to time with 22 colibri from my S&W model 34. Sometimes, it even kills them.

I agree, I use them in a Remington pump and it is quieter than a pellet gun and I have 17 shots.
