I'm 20, and I've got a fairly good idea that I'm going to be getting a Walther P99 and a Colt Commander for XMas. I turn 21 in March. Its within the law in AR, where we both live, to gift a handgun to someone under 21, and there are no restriction on private sale to 18-21 year olds. However, since these weapons were bought with the express intention of gifting them to a 20 year old, would this be a straw purchase? As much as it pains me, I may have my parents keep possession of the weapons until I turn of age...

I don't know about AR, but your parents can give you all the guns they want in most cases. I have two of "my" guns on my CCW permit here in California that are registered to my dad. You need to know specifically for your state and need to keep checking, but I am just trying to keep your hopes up as I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I've already gotten 2 handguns from my parents, no problem. The issue here is that the guns were purchased ONLY to give to me, and that is awfully close to a straw purchase :( Not worth risking my freedom over until i'm 100% sure. Gonna go speak to a lawyer tomorrow about it.

Well there you go then. Let us know what the lawyer says. If I were you, I wouldn't tell anyone that they were bought solely as gifts. That seems to be the only thing that might be illegal, is telling people they were bought solely as gifts. Just tell people your dad bought them and then changed his mind a few weeks later about wanting them so he gave them to you. Who in the heck is going to know? The gun dealers don't give a darn as long as you don't tell them, "Yeah I am only buying these as a straw purchase to give as a gift to my son." Plus if you still live at home, they still are technically in his house even! When they aren't you just tell someone you are borrowing your dad's handguns. I think you are making way too much of this thing and especially in a free state like AR. You are making us PRK residents sick! Go buy an AR and then complain something about that at least! :D

Good luck with the lawyer tomorrow.

And now that I think about it.
Not worth risking my freedom over until i'm 100% sure.
If your right to keep and bear arms isn't worth losing your freedom over, I don't know what is. Screw the government that makes you cower to receive a handgun from your own father. Keep your mouth shut about it and get those handguns! Do it for those of us who are really screwed in states like CA, MD, NJ, NY, and MA. They have nothing on you.

This whole thing reminds me of how stupid it was for me to have to have my own father buy my handguns when I was your age. Old enough to buy rifles and shotguns, fight in wars, kill myself with cigarrettes and porn, drive a car wherever I want, but not old enough to buy a handgun??? I thought that was the most rediculous thing ever. And I took pride in having my father get me two handguns and having them anyway. Lotta good any stupid law did against keeping me from exercising my rights to be able to defend myself.

I don't think you should needlessly take risks and your concern is good, but come on. How far are you going to bend for the government? Keep quiet and do what you feel is right. And try not to dump piss on anyone at parties and then shoot your handgun in the air and get expelled from college. Sorry, I am still wondering about this.

You don't have a problem here. If the firearms were bought as a gift, the purchasers could legitimately buy them, even in their name(s) rather than yours. If you're legally allowed to possess a given type of firearm, then anyone can legally give such a firearm to you.
