Hey,

Anyone know of any current production short, handy bolt actions in .308?

I can get a Marlin 336 for $350, so don't want to spend more than $400-$500.

I've seen the Ruger scout, but that has a hefty price tag for a truck gun.

Thanks, and post pics if you got em.

as far as Rugers go...I think the Ruger Compact Magnum..in 308..is a better package than the Ruger scout......seena few around 600. bucks

No reasonably priced options that I'm aware of. Buy the gun you want and have a gunsmith install iron sights.

Lots of used Remingtons out there.

This one just sold for $351.

All would make great truck gun beaters.

Thanks. I didn't know about gunauction.com. I'll check it out.

Having a gunsmith install sights is a great idea. There's a good one here in Redmond. Thanks.

Be careful there.

Add a new rear sight, front sight, and front ramp prices, plus gunsmith bills, and before long?

You could have just bought a nice used rifle with sights already on it for less money.

I have a Savage Scout. They come with iron sights mounted. Not the best or fanciest sights, but they work. They gun is handy and shoots well.

Its a shame rifle makers dont offer more in that configuration, but I guess the demand and money just isnt there. Besides, they'd have to go back to a "proper" rifle stock, instead of all these made for shooting with scopes.

I saved up and bought the ruger scout and am glad I did. It is my pickup gun and is very handy. What made you want a 308 for a pickup every day gun? just curious. Swamp Rooster

Cause he lives in Oregon?

Everybody else has at least a .308 in thier truck, if not an IED in thier cabin!

Just joking! :D

Ha, IED's in central oregon only though.

Why 308, it's a good medium caliber. A lot of folks have the 223/556 around here, but I figured if a 308 is good enough for Col Cooper, it's good enough for me. 30/30 does the job too, I know, but there is just something about a 308. I guess knowing it'll bring down anything from a coyote to moose makes it a great choice for around here. (I know, make the shot count).

Thanks for all the info!!!

I have been looking into the ruger compact magnum myself and the more I look the
more I like. The gunsite looks really neat, but is it worth the pricetag? I like the idea of the idea of the ishapore enfield, excellent beater rifle.

I compared the Gunsite & the .308 Compact Magnum in trying to decide between the two.
For me, the Gunsite's features were largely irrelevant when looked at individually & once I realized that it was an easy decision.

The CM won & I quite like it.
I did have to replace the tiny front bead sight with something more substantial, but it makes a reasonably powerful compact rifle with iron sights, which is what I was looking for.

Do you have to have new? I really like my FR-8 Mauser. kinda hard to find but built like a tank and very accurate for me.
