It’s the day we celebrate the planet’s greatest cartridge. So let’s sing the praises of the .308 Winchester. Slayer of game, defender of freedom, paragon of accuracy, perfection in lead, copper and brass. God’s cartridge.

No reason why that would or should happen. This isn’t a cartridge comparison thread. How could it be? The is no comparison to the mighty .308

My favorite rifles are typically 308, but it has a fair amount of competition that are arguably on par or better
but if we say the .308 as bullet diameter instead of cartridge...

Everyone knows that the 308 is antiquated and irrelevant, you gotta get something modern like a 6mm Creedmoor to shoot a deer at 50 yards or defend freedom from a couch at home.;);)

I read about that old cartridge, it used to be popular from what I gathered. The model 70 featherweight, which has also been popular, was so chambered when it first came up, I believe. I guess it could still be used if a 6.5 Creedmoor is not at hand. :). I like old cartridges, I own a .30-06 Springfield and a .270 Winchester ;)

We'll have to wait until June 30th to celebrate the king of cartridges, but by all means let's celebrate his little brother.

Dang, it’s a great day. I was all excited that it was 38 special day and 38 super day. I guess 308 is OK because it’s little brother 30 carbine and it’s third cousin 30-30 get to do some celebrating today too.

You say old, I say timeless. Like other groundbreaking advancements from the 50's, they are still with us today because they were ahead of their time, innovative and effective. Here's the top 5 list of inventions from the era that changed the world:

    1. Of course, at the top of the list, The .308 Winchester - 1952
    2. The Barcode - 1952
    3. The Passenger Jet - 1952
    4. The Solar Cell - 1954
    5. Fiber Optics - 1956

Is it OK that most of my .308 ammo is actually 7.62x51? Just asking for a friend.

We don't speak German or Japanese because of the 30-06 used by the Greatest Generation.

It's hard to go wrong with a 308. While I may not think it is the "best" at any one thing, it does everything well enough.

I have used it linked up (150 grain NATO ball) in the M60, M240, MK48, M134 minigun, HK21. MG3, and MAG 58, and in mags for the FAL and G3. I have used it in the precision role (168, 173, and 175 grain match grade) in the M21, M25, M24, SSG, SR25, LTOBR, SCAR 17, and M110. I've even killed a deer or 2 with it using 150 grain soft points.

Possessing a versatility that's only matched by its lethality. A veteran of wars, both cold and hot. When the 5.56 wasn't quite up to the task, what does The Green Machine grab? Well, you know.......
