Hard Chrome Rifles

I was perusing around Classic Arms today, as I am in the market for a Yugo underfolder before the '08 elections(can't be too safe) when I saw these hard chromed underfolders(about a 1/4 down the page)...I'm not even sure what to think of them aesthetically speaking, but I was just curious as to how well the finish holds up.

Besides looks, is there any practical reason for doing this, at least to warrant the extra $100?

If it's true hard chrome, and is done right, it's one of the most durable of all gun finishes, and probably the best "all around" finish.

Hard chrome is one of the few gun finishes that's considered to be a true "life time" finish.

It's actually harder than a Swiss needle file, the chrome is "slippery" so fouling doesn't stick to it, and it's proof against all solvents, and very resistant to rust.
The only down side is the bright finish, and you can get hard chrome in the original satin gray color. These rifles look like a more shiny finish.

$100 extra is a bargain, since most platers charge much more than that for a pistol.

Well first of all, what would I look for if I was able to see one in person?

Second, has anyone purchased one of these, or any firearm from Classic Arms that could attest to their quality in the chroming department?

It's almost tempting to get one, I feel the need to have atleast one shiny gun in my collection.

I'm just not sure if I could work up the nerve to take it to the range when their our other people around.

What about painting it? Does that defeat the purpose?

Also, if I did paint it, could I strip the paint off without ruining the chrome finish?

I doubt paint would hurt hard chrome, but I don't think paint would stick very well. The chrome should be resistant to various paint thinners and cleaners.

Hard chrome is well worth the expense

I've had it done on a Bisley Ruger and I'm very pleased with it. I opted for the matte finish and it is a dull gray. I wouldn't call it unattractive, but compared to brushed stainless it just doesn't catch the eye of the casual shooter.
Easy to clean, tough as nails, doesn't reflect like stainless, and very resistant to just about anything you could spill or get on it.
The only caveat would be using a reputable shop for the service.

Well, I still have a few days before I order it, so hopefully someone who has bought a chromed rifle from Classic Arms will come along and give me some opinions on quality...

I can say, the more I look at it, the more I like the shiny chrome with contrasting black grips.

I still need to know if Classic's chrome job holds up...Otherwise I'll just go with black...You can't beat black.

Well I just read that their hard chrome has a lifetime guarantee, so that's a plus.

The more and more I stare at this thing, the more and more I need one.

Everyone needs at least a little bling...right?

If I like the finish on it, I might have to get one of those chromed RIA's they have for $400.

Correct me if I am wrong, but every chromed long arm needs a chromed .45 companion?

I don't know why, but I just don't like chrome. I don't even care for stainless. Too gaudy for me, even if it's a durable finish.

That's nice, but I would love a nice chrome AK with a light laminated wood stock/forend. Deee-lish!

As has been stated, HC is one of the best finishes available. I don't think it is worth the $100 extra for the finish, but to some it may be.

I hear you, and if I do get it HC'ed it will more than likely be the only HC'ed rifle I ever get...I just think having one would be neat.

OK, what happened?

I changed the title to "Hard Chromed Firearms" and asked Correia to move it to General(because there is more traffic) and he kindly obliged, and now the title is says Rifles again, and we are back in rifle country...

The reason I asked for the move, is because it had been in rifle country for a few days, and no one could answer my question on the quality of Classic's chrome job, so I figured someone that could comment may see it in general.
