Harris Bipod info needed

Ok, first, you just need a basic Harris bipod. You don't need an adapter or anything else.

Second, for varmint hunting, I recommend the hinged or swivel model. Basically what it does is it lets the rifle adjust for cant. If you are on an unlevel surface, you can adjust the gun to keep the crosshairs level. It does not rotate left to right, but the levelness of the rifle. Any Harris I have is a swivel model.

Third, Length. The length is up to you. If you are going to be hunting where you want to make shots while sitting on your butt, get the model 25(s). It adjusts tall enough to do that. If you are just going to be shooting prone or off the bench, get the model L(s). Unless you are only going to be shooting benchrest, I wouldn't recommend the benchrest model.

$108 for a swivel model is too expensive. Shop around some more and see where else you can find them. I wouldn't pay over $90 for one. They are worth the money, but you should be able to find a swivel model for less than $90.

Good luck.

This is the Model 25(s). Note it is pretty tall without extending it. You can extend it tall enough to shoot sitting down.

This is the Model L(s). Note it is not as tall. I prefer this model for anything other than hunting coyotes where I might want to sit in the shade of a juniper on a tall hill. This is the "prone bipod" if you ask me.

Old threads.

What ever model you get I would get one with the swivel base. When do you really ever shoot off a perfectly level surface?

I use my rifle for bench use and bought a Harris 6"-9" swivel from Midsouth for $80. The Shooters Ridge bipod is a Chinese made copy of a Harris for less money. Gander Mountain had the Shooters Ridge 6"-9" for like $65. Not sure where they can be ordered from.

unless you are planning on shooting prone exclusively, go w/ the biggest harris (25). works for prone shooting, very comfortable for seated shooting.

the shooters ridge bipods work ok, but you will have to tinker w/ 'em to get them to work properly... the nuts that hold the legs onto the base tend to fall off, and they are just simply not as refined as the harris versions. but, they do work. also, i don't think there is a shooters ridge version as long as the harris 25, though i could be wrong on that.

Thanks for all the info!

One more question though, is the permanently attached bipod better (More solid/ stable) than the one that attaches on the sling swivel?

What is a permenatly attached bipod? If you are referring to a barrel mount or something like that, forget it! A barrel mount will effect your accuracy. You want your bidpod attached to your stock in some fashion. And with that I don't envision you ever having a problem with a bipod attached to the QD stud on your rifle. Look at all of the sniper rifles with Harris Bipods. If there was a problem with the QD stud not being a strong enough attachment point, they wouldn't attach there. I have never had an issue with any of my Harris bipods of any sort. Certainly nothing like them breaking off the rifle or even coming loose in the field.

I have a harris on my varmiter,Im not sure of the exact model but to adjust it on unlevel surfaces,I merely look at the bubble level on my scope and hit the release button on the spring loaded legs and tighten them accordingly.

I have the long version that extends out to the very barrel tip when the legs are up.I hate lying down in a newly sprouting beanfield thats full of stinging ants, the longer version allows me to sit.another plus for the longer version is that there are times when there is just too much ground cover to effectivly see and groundhogs might only pop up exposing their head for about 6-10 seconds.

in my opinion, the short version is good for bench shooting.I had a short version on it originally to sight it in then added the longer one for the beanfielding.

it doesnt swivel and is attached to the sling stud in the stock.a unckle mikes quick detachable swivel snaps into the bipod for my sling.paid 55 bucks for it several years ago.if your adding your own swivel, remember to remove any bumps or burrs in the barrel channel before tightening everything down.
